Suppressors that disappointed you and why?

Sincere question … does the OG 65 make your ears ring like the OG 30 ?

I doubt the sincerity of the question, but I will answer it as best I can.

Back in July, I fired the OG once without hearing protection, prone, in light rain, on an 18” 6.5mm Grendel, immediately after firing a shot with the same rifle with the Scythe on it. Under those circumstances, the OG made my ears ring.

Since then, I have fired nearly 300 rounds with the OG and hearing protection, using a 21” .270. And probably 1500 other centerfire cartridges using the Raptors and Scythe. And another 200 unsuppressed centerfire rounds with hearing protection in. I can tell the difference between suppressed and unsuppressed with plugs and headphones. It’s readily apparent. But, with plugs in and headphones on, I can’t tell any difference in sound between any of my suppressed center fire rifles. No ears ringing.

Since then, I have fired three unsuppressed shots without hearing protection. All three were from my muzzleloader while deer hunting (it took an extra shot to finish off one of the bucks I shot this past weekend). None of those shots made my ears ring. Not sure if it’s the excitement or the hats and hood I had on (military issue beanie with FROG hood over it, with blaze orange toboggan over that - it was 16 out). But only an idiot or a zealot would suggest that the OG is louder than a muzzleloader. Ears ringing is not a good measure for “hearing safe.”

I haven’t fired the OG 6.5 without hearing protection yet. And I probably won’t until I shoot it at a deer. The same will be true of my ZG 6.5 when it comes in and all my other suppressors. My ears are not precision test instruments. I won’t be using them to “test” gunshot sounds. If you want to do that, keep on keepin’ on. Not my ears, not my problem.

Anyone in East Idaho with an OG? I’m curious to hear one. There was definitely a hype train before its launch, but I’m also remembering it being said a few times that it would not be as quiet as others. The “tone” being its strength instead.

My god we got a real yapper over here , It was sincere …. I didn’t ask what you considered the definition of hearing safe was … it was a simple question …. The OG has traumatized you so badly you refuse to shoot a suppressed rifle at the range ONCE without hearing protection , that’s pretty telling

this forum is the only reason Swfa is in business

I disagree with this part of your statement. I have met a surprising number of people who have never heard of RokSlide who love SWFA scopes. And that makes me happy, because I want them to succeed.

For the rest of it, I won’t argue at all with your opinion. I will just add my own opinion. Almost no item I own is exactly what I would want if I could have it made to my specifications. And quite a few of the things I own might well be objectively worse if made to my specifications.

US/UM appear to try to be as good as possible, but sometimes appear to over promise and underdeliver. Running a business is hard. Dealing with people is hard. And marketing is a tough act. But I don’t think they are dishonest. I think they are still learning the reality of managing consumer expectations as they branch out into new market segments. And that is just how things go.

Unlike many other companies, however, they are also happy to tell you that not everyone will like or need their products. That was explicit in the OG podcasts and on this forum. I view it as explicit in everything they sell. I expect that once the RokScope finally gets to market, there will be people complaining about it because it doesn’t meet their expectations. But I don’t think it will be because of a “bait and switch” or some other dishonest marketing stunt.

Prior to the OG’s release, I argued extensively with many of their design decisions. In particular, I questioned why they didn’t strive for more suppression from it (as did several others). I thought that 133 dBA was going to sound loud to people used to longer cans. And their “representatives” on RokSlide agreed with that criticism. The things many people dislike about the OG are precisely the same things. I still think US should have made suppression a greater priority for the OG.

But I knew what I was getting when I bought it and I think they honestly represented its attributes. At the time, I thought it was the best available 4” .30 caliber can. I still think it is the best available 4” .30 caliber can. And if someone makes a better 4” .30 caliber can next year, I will be happy for consumers getting better products. And I might even upgrade to the new and better item. But I could wait forever for the “next thing.” And it is always tough to know when it’s the right time to pull the trigger.

Like I said, I doubted the sincerity of the question. I should have known better than to take the bait.

This was the timeline for my last purchase from Unknown.

Ordered from Unknown Suppressors on September 12th. Listed same SOT as previous order.

Emailed my SOT on September 16th to give him a heads up.

Shipped by US to my SOT on September 26th.

Delivered to SOT on September 30th. We could not log in to sign and submit forms that evening due to inability to access the ATF’s system.

Signed form on October 6th.

Form submitted to ATF on October 8th (for a trust).

Picked it up on October 31.

I was concerned, but not really complaining about the timeline above. The only thing about which I could complain is the two weeks it took US to ship it to my SOT. That might have made all the difference in getting my order two weeks earlier and having more time to play with it prior to the start of deer season. But, I don't think that is totally unreasonable. I got it in enough time to check zero with it before the rifle season opener, so I am quite happy. It's going out with me at some point this weekend, probably for my afternoon hunt on Saturday.
The condensed version is this: My order was placed the day before yours.
SOT information was sent the same day, and Jake confirmed receipt of it.

The color I ordered appears to have been last in line for cerakoting and engraving. Short straws are drawn sometimes. So be it.
I also ordered a cover and thought that might have been the hold up, since I had not received any updates throughout the process. It wasn’t, and supposedly the can was ready to ship when the shutdown started. Excrement occurs. Not US’s fault.
After reports of Forms 3 & 4 being approved and still receiving none of the expected process updates , I reached out again and learned of a paperwork issue between ATF and US.
This ATF paperwork fubar (I assume it was an ATF mix up…I could be dense, but the explanation I got wasn’t crystal clear, and it’s a lot easier to imagine ATF screwing up vs US, but no one is immune to mistakes) was being worked around. That work around was supposedly 30 minutes from completion 16 days ago. Last Friday (today being Thursday), it was 30 minutes from completion again. Hmmm…

Hence my frustration. Becoming aware of your timeline (and thank you for sharing it, by the way) doesn’t make it any better.

If I weren’t jonesing to see what all the fuss is about with the Reaper, I probably wouldn’t GAS.

This is largely my assessment as well.

I’ve never owned, or heard, or seen an OG suppressor and I’m never gonna shoot a suppressed or unsuppressed rifle at the range without hearing protection. That’s just fricking dumb.

I dont care that its 9" but it isnt my only 9" suppressor. What are you comparing it to?
i used to use my sico 338 harvester alot, now i just use this unless i'm running a big 30 or 338. i hear lots of other cans as well at the range. my buddy has a 6.5 ultra 9 gen2.

i never found the need to run ear pro with it, and seems the suppression does just as well as anything else in its class for weight/size.

hell my gunsmith ran a 338 sherman through his with no issues lol

So, what happened was. We have over 100 Reapers stuck in ATF Jail, with essentially no timeline as to when we will be able to get the ATF is going to fix an issue that they created. The issue is not something that we did wrong. Ive been told by a couple other MFRs that this issue can take between 60-120 days to get resolved. Again, not an issue that was our fault, the ATF screwed up and still havent fixed it. That said, your suppressor was caught in the middle of that and we had to figure out a work around because your serial number was already submitted, and it was one of the serial numbers caught up in the ATF mess. This is not an excuse for it taking as long as it has for us to get you your suppressor and please reach out to me [email protected] so we can figure out how to soften the blow. My sencerist apologies!

Also, The ATF was approving forms but they have not been working on issues such as the issue we have with these Reapers. The govt just reopened and we are hoping this issue gets resolved quickly but we arent counting on it.
