Suppressor on a 24 inch barrel?

I’m looking into buying my first suppressor. It would be for my hunting rifle - a 6.8 western browning x-bolt with a 24 inch barrel. I have the scythe ti in mind due to its compact size and weight.

Has anyone run a suppressor on a barrel this long? Any issues with balance or using it in the field?

No.

You would hate a 30 inch barrel in the field. My 19 inch 270 gets 3000+ fps with a 129 lrx and is under 26 inchs long with can. Mid size cartridges and short barrel are where silencers shine IMHO.

I had a similar set up in Idaho 2023 it got caught on everything. It was a huge hassle. I had a 26 inch barrel with a 7 inch suppressor. After that trip I went with a 18 inch barrel and folding stock it’s a night and day difference. I didn’t notice an issue with balancing for shooting. It was always on some type of support. It was just carrying the thing around was exhausting, constantly backtracking and trying to unsnag.

I used a 22-24” barrel for years with a suppressor. After an aggravating hunt in thick brush I built a rifle with an 18” barrel and never looked back. Have since built several and am very happy with them.

I’ve used a 24” barrel and a 9” suppressor, it’s definitely a pain in the ass but still worth having a suppressor. Rifle constantly hitting branches/ brush is one thing but for me the rifle always wants to roll back on my sling/ shoulder from being so top heavy and that’s definitely the most frustrating. Shooting wise, absolutely no concerns.

I’d think you’ll be ok with a 24” barrel and a 6” suppressor but you’ll eventually want to chop the barrel or get a new rifle like others have said.

Hunting in thick timber and brush, shorter is handier.

Open lands, use what you want.

I’ve hung a scythe off a 10lb browning w/24” barrel. It’s shot more off a rest than offhand.

It can be a pain for sure. I have 26” barrel plus 7” suppressor.

I strapped it onto the outside with the butt hanging below the pack a little and at a bit of an angle. It didn’t stick up quite as far as it looks in the picture. It can me a little more manageable. If that is what you have.

Of course, I now have shorter rifles, one with folding stocks now.

For most situations it doesn’t make the rifle less shootable.

Run 18-24 bbl's, 7 inch Banish on the longer ones. No problems it is just sometimes a hassle in the bush. My hunting buddy always says you look the a radio operator.

I’ve run a 24” and 26” barrel with a 9” suppressor. To me, it was really no big deal.

You can always take the suppressor off and put it in a molle pouch attached to your pack.

You’ll be fine. It really depends on what type of country you hunt as well. If it’s primarily thick timber, then sure a shorter barrel is handier, but you’ll still get snagged up if your rifle is on your back.

If I’m hunting thicker areas, I usually carry my rifle, so snagging isn’t as big an issue.

Here’s my 30” 338 RUM and a TBAC 338 Ultra. Definitely open country set up haha.

I have 3 guns that are 24” and I run a 9inch suppressor on them. I love them. Longer barrels are faster and quieter suppressed. I don’t mind the length

This is all great feedback, thanks everyone. I figured it would be annoying in some situations but overall, okay.

I live in Montana - so I hunt a good mix of open country and timber. I’ll have to work on my quad and lower back strength for all the crouching beneath tree limbs when I hunt the timber

DD Enticer Lti on a 26" then cut to 24", then cut to 20". I'm going back to 24".

As others have said, its doable, but pretty annoying unless you're in the wide open sage country.

For myself 22inch is the sweet spot with a light short suppressor. You get used to whatever you have over time.

I've done it a ton and it didn't bother me in the least. Short guns are nice, but I getting the most ballistically out of a cartridge and it being quieter than its short counterpart has its own awesomeness. Maybe busting brush I'd feel differently, but its really a non-issue for me.

good feedback…..I actually didn’t realize a shorter barrel would be louder. I knew it hurt velocity and energy a bit but the noise increase is interesting.

I run four rifles with 24" barrels and another with a 26" barrel.
All of these use a 9" can. Really not an issue with length in timber/brush - carry in hand if you're concerned with getting hung up..

My X bolt has the exact same barrel in my 6.8W Mountain Pro. Although I worried the can would negatively affect accuracy, it is more accurate with the can (significant POI shift). I use a SilencerCo Ebo, but am saving up for the Scythe.

It is not as unwieldy as I expected because my Mountain Pro is very light. Great for open areas and blind hunting.

NOTE: X bolts have metric threading. You will need to purchase a direct thread mount to match the threading.

If you have the funds get a 16-18” timber gun also. Almost no need for the length or extra velocity in timber imo.
