Suppressor Dilemma

I'm looking to purchase a reasonably light centerfire can that retains the accuracy of a precision hunting rifle. I had narrowed it down to the Ultra 5/7/9, the Q cans and the Dead Air Nomad and Sandman Ti. After shooting all of them I formed a couple opinions:

1. The Ultra 5 is awesome, but loud. Even with subs.
2. The Ultra 9 is super quiet, but too long to carry for miles in my opinion
3. The Nomad sounded great and seems to be made very well, but it's noticeably heavier than the rest.

Trying to be pragmatic - The Ultra 7 and Q Half-nelson appeared to me as clear leaders, I'm leaning towards the Q.

Unfortunately I did not get to test for POI shift, freebore-boost or group size. So I'm still conflicted and to add to it a new player has entered the fray. The Gunwerks 6ix has design elements from both Q and TB. It falls in the middle in terms of volume, has a reasonable-looking mounting system, has some modularity with the reducr system and is the least expensive.

Recognizing that it's unlikely that many people have experience with the Gunwerks cans, does anyone have any input, experience or advice?

I've got an Ultra 7, shot it the first time today actually on my 6.5 Creed practice barrel. Pretty damn quiet. Super stoked on it and it's going to be great on my hunting rifle.

Shot a match 2 weeks ago in Utah and Phil Velayo was running one of the Gunwerks 8" cans. That thing was amazingly quiet. I haven't run one personally and I haven't heard the 6". They look sick though and the designer of them (Rex Ribelin) has a ton of experience and seems to have knocked those cans out of the park.

I don't think you'll go wrong with the Ultra 7, Half Nelson or a Gunwerks can.

FYI, it took me 14 months to get my can out of jail but I have a buddy that just got his back that he did paperwork on in February of 2019!!!!!!!!!

I personally don’t think the ultra 9 is to long to use to hunt. That being said I would go with the 7 or 5 if your looking for minimum length. Thunderbeast is the gold standard with regards to minimum poi shift and decibel reduction. I have sent thier customer service at 10pm at night and gotten an email back within a half hour. That’s what really sold me on their product with such a long wait time now for the tax approval I have no doubt they’ll help with any issues that I could ever have.

My fiend has it and loves the can. He says The repeatability for a true precision rifle isn’t there if you take the can off and put it back on. That’s his only gripe and not first hand but I do trust what he is reporting.

I don’t have any of the cans you’re considering. When I was trying to decide which to buy it was suggested that I focus on the mounting system and the rest would fall into place. Tbac is known for repeatability, the next best mounting system is a taper mount IMO. Dead nuts repeatability, no moving parts to break or wear, doesn’t get stuck or come loose.

Good Lord. When you read some of the wait time threads on other forums it makes a guy wonder what in the **** is going on with the application reviews.. My ultra 7 application was sent in February 2018, still waiting.

Just curious, you submit individual or trust? 14 months for an individual might mean you’re caught up in the FBI background black hole.....that would suck!

Trust, but I when I called a couple weeks ago i'm pretty sure they said it was still pending FBI background check.

That’s where mine sat almost the entire time. Everytime I called they said they were just waiting for FBI background check to come back.

Mine was individual.

2 more inches from an ultra 7 to a 9 would hardly be noticeable. And if you're going through thick stuff you can always take it off - I haven't lost zero when I take mine off and on again. More baffles and they don't weigh much.

I had one that took a year. Then I found out the application sat in the dealers drawer for 6 months of that time

I would be hesitant to be an early adopter of Gunwerks since there are already proven players....plus gunwerks is a little gimmicky in my opinion.

I agree, but my hesitation is not due to concern of quality, just the general lack of information out there given its recent launch date. They are very proud of their products, not that that's unwarranted, relative to the rest of their line, the cans are reasonably competitive in price. That said, if they were Ti, I think I would've already pulled the trigger.

Loud and clear on the whole "vote with your dollars" thing. I would tend to agree, but product does speak loudly too, then again so does the TB.

Everything on the Ultra 7 seemed solid. Did you go with the CB or DT?

Also, was that your first can? I've heard the e-file goes faster the second time around...

Thunder Beast has set the standard & is a known quantity. I have an older 30-P that I’ve had for sometime & am very happy with. Have an Ultra-7 that will be outta ATF jail in a month or so (there’s my bias).

I have no experience with Nomad.

As for Q, I work too hard for my money to give a cent to someone like KB....and that’s from a guy with an M4-2000 back from when he was running AAC. The TBAC crew is extremely helpful and actually supports shooting sports....they don’t just throw tantrums and put out products with mildly amusing names.

Again, I’m biased, but TBAC gets my vote for the foreseeable future.

As long as you guys understand that Thunder Beast copied their mounting design from another suppressor manufacturer. You can PM me for details, including patent information. But it is sad that a company does this and then gets all the credit you all believe they deserve. They don't.

I own direct mounts...everyone makes direct mount, man.

Secondly, mounts should be standardized. And if you’re buying based on the mount, you’re focused on the wrong things.

Actually, this is not the direct mount you are referring to. This is for the TBAC mount system, which was copied. Prior to that mount, it was a direct thread system, which of course, was not copyrighted since it was standardized threading.

My focus is in other things, like integrity as a whole. Based on my information, there was more than just the mount design that was copied, but I digress.

Another vote for the TBAC Ultra 7. Can't go wrong there....

I run a SilCo Harvester too and both have been dead nuts repeatable with zero POI charge swapping between rifles. I run everything direct thread.

Mine was submitted 10/2017, stamp received 4/2019. FBI black hole.

Direct mounts for me as well. Not into buying $100+ QD mounts for every rifle. Plus then I can spin it on my buddy's rifles that are threaded for them to try out while we are out shooting together.

Just make sure your buddies threaded barrel is concentric with the bore so you don’t end up with a baffle strike and one less buddy. I’ve run across several factory threaded barrels that were way out of spec.

Yes sir a look down the bore is a must for sure especially when putting them on 30 cals. Shooting 223s and 264s with the 30 cal has a bit more leeway but I still check

I was so excited when I got my first can I almost forgot to check. Barrels was waayyy out of spec

YIKES....luckily have yet to find an out of spec barrel....hope I never do. Don't wanna be the bearer of bad news to my buddy when I say "Sorry you cant shoot this suppressor your guns all goobered"

“Here, try out my rifle and suppressor. You brought ammo right” FYI, a carbon arrow makes a pretty good alignment checker, depending on caliber.
