Suppressed Elk Rifle vs 338 Cannon + Ear Pro

If you want a blood trail, and you want to track it so bad for some unknown reason, get some dogs and shoot the thing in the guts and have fun running around the woods.
If you don’t want to waste your time on all that nonsense like the rest of us, do some real research about bullet construction and ballistics. Then actually go out and shoot what you’re going to hunt with,a lot. It shouldn’t take you long to find the truth. Or keep losing animals and eating tag soup, doesn’t really matter to me.

At the end of the day there is absolutely nothing wrong with a 215gr Berger hybrid in a 300wm that he is already shooting. That is one of the best 30 cal bullets produced

905 yards with a 6 UM. Died in 10 seconds. Not sure why you'd need a bigger bullet. Impact velocity of about 2035 fps.
Maybe I need to drive up the road and check that 6 um out 😁

I see that in the faster 6.5’s. But for the CM, especially a short barreled 6.5CM, I think it will be hard to beat the 130TMK.
Typically people tend to use heavy for caliber bullets in the bigger powder volume cartridges thus faster by default. A 6.5cm isn't even on my radar. If I was to shoot a creedmoor it would be a 6mm but at that point might as well just go 6um in either shoulder option.

If you’re looking for wound channel and penetration balance in a bullet I’ve had good luck with mono’s that shed their petals. Not really rokslide popular but results have been great on animals for the group I hunt with. Generally get an exit and the moment the petals separate has a big upset and then the petals do a surprising amount of damage and penetrate deeper than you’d think. The shank portion almost always exits.

I don’t get these comments to questions or post. Like why so confrontational? Dude asked a question and now in your story he’s running around the woods losing animals and eating tag soup because of some narrative you’re spinning up all on your own just because someone shared something or asked a question on a forum of all places. How dare they.

That was only Ricky D's second post. Please forgive him.

Ricky D came in hot. 😂

I see it a lot on other sites but it’s becoming more common here. Like a dude just asked a nice softball question about balancing hunting with young kids etc.. and a good number of responses were snarky “ask your wife not us, sorry if that sounds harsh bro” type responses.

Yeah dude I’m pretty sure he’s talking to his wife AND wanting advice from hunters who’ve done it, ha chill out.

Now people choosing to tee off on your thread? Makes sense, you’re close to speaking blasphemy against the cult of the TMK. ;)

@TradLife406 what are the specs on your rifle? How did you go about building it? Thanks!
I’m glad he posted that picture.

Now ask yourself: how much 6mm case capacity would it take for you to push that bullet to an impact velocity like his, at your elevation, at the longest distance you reasonably expect to shoot stuff?

I bet the answer is somewhere in the 6mmCM/243W range.

I’m hardly an expert elk hunter but I’m 100% convinced the 6mms are the way to go. Treat it like a math problem, starting with the clean kill shown above, then work your way backwards, including your shot distances and elevation and barrel length, to figure out what cartridge you need to get the muzzle velocity you need, to successfully complete the equation. I honestly don’t think it has to be any more difficult than that.

That was only Ricky D's second post. Please forgive him.

No need for forgiveness

The man asked a question, expecting opinions from strangers. And you’re surprised to read something you don’t agree with? Welcome to the internet.

Above all else, the amount of shooting you do in field positions throughout the year will affect your hunt more than caliber or bullet ever will. Confidence comes from practice, not what caliber or bullet some dude on the internet said you should use.
