Suppressed 22 LR for 13 Month Old Daughter

Do you have a fixed 4X recommendation?
The old 4 power 32mm tasco pronghorn scope is excellent out to about a hundred yards on game. You have to get them off eBay, and you absolutely must by the ones made in japan, or Taiwan. They're pretty darn good and they're about 30 bucks. Clarity is good, adjustments are good, crosshairs are good up to about 75 yards but they are a little bit big. I've had problems with some of the cheap Scopes like Simmons and Chinese made stuff. Parallax problems. Big time.
They're perfectly capable on a high power rifle.

I understand if you think my idea is bad. Some folks just got to have something new. But I've bought four or five of them and every one of them has worked flawlessly. I like getting a $30 or $40 scope that I would have to pay 10 times that new. I also have some high-end Leopold LRP scopes but I put them on rifles that need one to reach their potential.

The Ruger American with the shorter stock insert is great for kids, and a really nice little rifle. I am a huge fan of the Tikka T1x, I have 2 and they are everything I'd want in a 22. One really cool rifle that lots of people aren't familiar with is the TacSol Owyhee. Its essentially a Ruger 10/22 takedown but a bolt action. It fits into a Magpul 10/22 takedown stock, uses 10/22 mags, and some other 10/22 accessories. It weighs 3.8 pounds, and is just a riot with a can. I put a TacSol TSS integral suppressed barrel on mine, its probably one of my most favorite guns bar none.

I would thread what he’s got as it’s lighter. A 6x SWFA would be great for dialing and holding, if he isn’t doing that this is a god spot for a fixed 4x.

I want him to get used to dialing. I’ve had him do that a bit shooting longer range.

OP not to be a Debbie downer but I was also very excited to outfit my kids with rifles and bows as soon as possible. Unfortunately they grew up to shoot lefty so keep that in mind. I never saw that coming and had to do some last minute trading.

I should clarify I traded the rifles and bow I bought, not the kids.

Ruger American compact with a Leupold FX-II 2.5x20, easily shoots moa at 100 yds, very quiet with CCI standard velocity, its ammo of choice, with a Banish 22.

Another Rascal recommendation here. I bought one when for my now 15 year old. I threaded it and left the irons on it, this before they offered a threaded version . Talk about just silly fun shooting that thing with a can on it. He has long since out grown it.

Form has anything changed since you made this recommendation? Love a fixed 4 on a .22 but can’t seem to find anyone making them anymore

Not that I am aware of. Though for new scopes, the SWFA UL 22LR scope with the power ring taped at 4x is a good option.

We went down this road too but not as early as 21 months. The crickets made for fun colors to the girls and they could hold/carry them. Something to be said for learning to safely handle the rifle. My girls could aim…no point them and shoot but the triggers are heavy. Ended up with them shooting a t1x with a swfa 1-4. They had trouble finding the target in the scope and the huge field of view of the 1-4 helped. After they could consistently find a milk jug I swapped the 1-4 for a 6x. Now at 8 and 10 they do fine with the size of the t1x and Howa mini with the vg stock. My 223 tikka is in ctr stock and that’s a bit big. I’m thinking today I’ll order a rokstok and the tikka 16” tikka. Already have a new 6x and a set of sports match rings. I’m a fan of the light tikka trigger rimfire and centerfire for kids. Those tiny hands can really struggle to pull a heavier trigger especially if they’re having to reach for it.

22 subsonic suppressed is really quiet. Like Hollywood quiet. You’ll only need ear pro if you wear it dry firing.

Ballistics with subsonic are a turd, but it allows you to practice dialing and wind holds at close ranges, like 100 yards. Anything beyond 150 is really long range.

You can use much less expensive scopes for it, because if it fails it’s not a big deal like if a scope fails on a big hunt. The drawback is that if the dialing isn’t great (i.e. a .25MOA click is actually .22MOA) you’ll be frustrated.

Suppressed subsonic is a great way to get kids into shooting. It eliminates all the noise and blast.
Why would he need ear protection to dry fire his 22???

If folks are tikka fans, a t1x is easy and we can get the stocks for cheep on here. I took a t1x, chopped the LOP down to 11.5” (close to the rascals) with a cutoff saw. Then for $18 put a grind to fit pad on it. He’s shot it since he was 5 without issue.

This year he’ll turn 7 and I took the exact stock and put it on a tikka in 6C. He’s used to the function (it’s identical minus maybe 25% more bolt lift pressure). He’s used to eye placement with the stock. He’s transitioned really well. And it only took 2 bolts to move the t1x stock onto the t3x.

I have a compact stock which I measured at ~12.5” that I’ll likely swap him into next year when 11.5” gets too short.

Rascal is cool because it’s so small shooting unsupported would be much easier. But if the plan is to shoot supported more, the tikka makes the transition a bit easier.
