Pretty new to reloading and trying to get some supplies together. I see Barnes lists superformance on their load data for 129 LRX and the new 155 LRX. My local gun store has superformance in stock. Anyone have good luck with this powder in 270 win? Any experience with it and 150 Accubond long range? Hornady 145 eldx? I have a couple boxes of both the LRAB and ELDX already, and hoping to get some of the 155 LRXs when available. FYI I have a 1:8 twist barrel. Any other suggestions for powders for these bullets that are available? I’d like to get Re 26, based off of what I’ve read it’s great in 270, but seems impossible to find.

Thanks for any advice!

They've really changed up some of their load data from the 2017 data I have for Barnes. I've been using Ramshot Big Game and Hunter in my .270win with pretty good results. And I just bought an 8lb'er of each a month ago from Powder Valley for right at $27/lb including hazmat, shipping, and tax.

I've loaded for the 270 for 50+ years and always with the 4831s until recently when I tried RL16 with the 129 LRX. Great velocity and accuracy. I'll rid my bench of 4831.

That 8 twist 270 sounds like a nice setup.

Can’t help you with the super performance powder as I’ve never used it, but can tell you that h4350 or H100v should work with the 129lrx based on my experience.

I’m looking forward to see what guys can get out of that 155lrx. Only issue I can see in a 270win is getting enough speed. For me, copper bullets need to be leaving the muzzle at, or very close to, 3000fps or else the nice looking bc means nothing because it’s not going to have the velocity at extended ranges to open up. Just something to think about. Super heavy bullets are all the rage now days, but with copper you need to get them moving quick, so heavy isn’t always best.

A 155 LRX sounds like a fun thing to put in the 6.8 western. Hard to see getting it going really fast in a 270.

I always ran 61 gr 4831 on 130gr partion, backed off to 60.5 on lrx , both 3150fps
i quit reloading do to lack of supply

Minimum impact velocity is 1,600fps on the 155 LRX so it should be fine out to ~500/800 yards respectively. 6.8 Western isn’t a whole lot faster than than the 270, just made for longer bullets.

Min velocities with cooper mean minimal expansion. All I shoot is copper and I have been very happy with it, but it does have a downside, which is its need for down range velocity to work correctly. 2000fps is a much safer number to use for the lrx. A fast 24” barrel with rl26 might get the 155gr lrx close to 3000fps muzzle velocity. I would have been happier if Barnes chose a lighter weight in the 140gr range for a heavier lrx in the .277. All that said, I use the 129gr lrx in a couple different 270’s and it’s worked great out to 480 yards.

SuperPerformance is a finicky powder. When it works, it works great! But it’s really hit and miss on what loads it shines on. You can find a winning load and you try to bracket up or down and it’s really poor. I’ve tried it on several loads with poor consistency.

I prefer temperature stability over velocity so I use H4831 for .270 Win loads above 130, and H4350 for 130 and below. My go-to hunting loads in .270 Win is 130 SST with 53.6 grains of H4350, MV at 3174, and 145 ELDX with 58.8 grains of H4831SC, MV at 3056. Both loads are 3 round groups below .500 moa. Obviously start low and work up.

I am curious to see where this goes as I’m also getting ready to get a new 1:8 twist 270 barrel put on my rem700. What’s the minimum opening velocity on the 155?

2000 is undoubtedly going to perform better, but I think it is good to have the point of reference that minimum on the 155 is 200 more than the minimum on the 129 (1,400). I don’t see any benefit to Barnes providing incorrect information on it, but at the same time, I make sure that I leave some room for error. I would also like something in between, but I’m also glad to have the heavier option for the 27 Nosler & Weatherby. I’m still using TSX and TTSX in the old 270s I have because they just did not like the 129 LRX.

Hornady has been loading Superformance for a few years in approximately 130 gr bullets. My brother has been loading it for years as well. He’s had good accuracy and velocity with it.
