I moved out to Montana to teach math last year, and my summer job was shingling houses last summer. My boss was great, and I was able to take 5 or 6 Fridays off to go hiking and fishing. I will most likely be sitting in a classroom for renewal credits this summer, and I would like to add a computer science endorsement to my certification.

I have a degree but it's not related to wildlife, hospitality and tourism management.

Don't need a Wildlife degree to be on a fire crew, a interpretive park ranger position, or trail crew.

As a fellow teacher, my suggestion would be to not get a job. We work hard all year and getting summers off is a benefit that everyone dreams of and is jealous of. Don't waste it.

Sure a trail job or a fire job gets you outside but if your goal for summers is to be outside, then just go outside. My goal is 30 nights in a tent from mid-May to the start of school in August and I always make my goal. I fly fish at least 4 days a week and have scouted the crap out of my hunting spots.

Make the most of your summers off.

I didn't read through the responses so I don't know if I'm doubling up on anyone's.

I think it would've been really sweet to have a summer job in college in Yellowstone or Glacier. Great way to get to intimately know the park and all its secrets.

In non-college towns, I know of a number of teachers that work in fly-fishing shops for the summer. The owners are out guiding so that frees them up and getting a teacher you assume is going to be more responsible than a college kid.

I sprayed weeds in the summers in college. It was a good paying job. And it was all college kids and school teachers for the most part. Just look up any county in MT for their weed district office. In Great Falls it would be Cascade County Weed and Mosquito. Mossquito spraying too is a good one. Call now though. And its a great way to see a whole county.

The Seeley Lake Fire district for the forest service provides cabins for the firefighters to stay in. Those guys are the first ones when a fire is called in, but they rarely stay out over night on fires. That's for the other people that come in to do.

Is there anywhere in the rockies or out west that hire in the summer? I'm a teacher and get all of june and july off. wife and I dont have kids and a new experience in a new place would be fun. it would just be me shes busy during summertime. Do any ranches or farms need help for the summer where your at? or is it just a pipe dream

Pretty easy to get a gig as a whitewater or flyfishing guide in Colorado. I did it. Everything there runs off an outfitter permit unlike say Montana. So you can't just put out your shingle and say "guide services available". So a fly shop will have an outfitter permit and run 5-25 guides off the permit. Lot of teachers and guys right out of college or even in college used to work for my old shop.

My suggestion to you is to find an area you'd like to live and then contact the forest service rep to get the job announcements through usajobs. It's pretty easy to get a job, the pay sucks, but your office will kick ass.
