Summer Vacation Suggestions.... Idaho, Montana, Wyoming..

If headed to the east side of the park and need to get fuel in East Glacier you will be totally fine and you don't even need to go to Browning. I do not stop in Browning with my family. We played Cut Bank in football in high school and while driving through Browning our bus was passed and someone stuck a .22 out of the window and shot our bus just missing a teammates head as it passed through the window on one side of the bus and out the window on the opposite side. I will be the first to admit that you can't paint a town a bad place because of one incident but I also have several friends who are Indians and live in Browning and tell me to avoid stopping in Browning if possible. If you want to see the east side of the park just take the going to the sun road from the west side over the top to the east side and you can head back west either the same way or come back over hwy 2.

I certainly do suggest taking the going to the sun road as it is a very cool drive and you see see lots of goats if you get out and hike around up top.

Thanks for the heads up!

Sounds like we will be staying away from Browning.. I thought you Montana guys did not have the low life's we have here in the South?

"Sounds like we will be staying away from Browning.. I thought you Montana guys did not have the low life's we have here in the South?" My experience living and traveling through the mountain and desert Western U.S.has taught me to avoid Indian Reservation towns for the most part. The poverty, alcohol abuse, and now Meth make a bad scene. No offense intended to any Indian Roksliders . I'm just calling it like I've seen it in multiple states and locations. Good thing is these areas are usually easily identified on most maps.

We went across going to the sun road and it was awesome, when we exited the park we didn't realize we were on the res and didn't think anything about it until we were treated bad. Had my wife and three kids in our jeep and had an incident just outside the park and ended up talking to a local border patrol agent who schooled me about "this is no place for a white man that is unarmed" in his words.
We heard horror stories about people stopping in Browning and getting robbed.

Man I'm glad We have good folks here on Rokslide with info like this. We Probably would have not gone over to that area on this trip anyway but I damn sure wont be visiting now..

Been working on the trip.. Thinking about flying into Boise and then heading up to Riggins for a float trip, then up to Coeur d'alene and priest lake. Then to Glacier and after a few days there heading down through Montana to the Yellowstone area. After that see the Tetons and fly out of jackson.. Probably going to hit a few of you good folks up for suggested places to visit and camp along the trip.. Thank you for all the info so far!

Sounds like an epic trip for the fam. I'm in somers on the north end of flathead lake. Let me know if you need any specifics on the Flathead valley area.

Any suggestions on Tent camping areas close to Mountain River outfittes in Riggins, Idaho? I may call the outfitters back and ask about this but wanted to know if anyone has done it.. thanks

Glacier park is incredibly beautiful. But beware of the crowds it has absolutely exploded in the past few years. I would highly recommend the swan valley the scenery is just as good as the park in my opinion and lots of good day hikes. But no matter what you do you will have a blast up here in God's country

After having Lazer lithotripsy Monday . Having a stent placed and removing it at home Thursday. Then having to go to the Emergency Room this morning at 4am with lots of problems stemming from the surgery "thought I was going to die" type pain.. Anyway, no way I was backing out on this trip. Just landed in Boise!! Here's to 17 days of lifelong memories to come.. thanks for all the advice friends.

Love it here in Riggings. Just the break from the larger city's we needed. Going to float the Salmon tomorrow. Then heading north.

Well fellas, the surgery I had before leaving went south on me and so I just had surgery here in white fish, Mt. Hopefully they get me straightened out and we can somewhat enjoy the rest of this vacation.. not gonna lie it's been damn rough thus far.

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully that's not the most memorable experience of trip. Some epic fishing up that way

Hopefully I will be set free tomorrow if lab work comes back good. My poor wife has been keeping the two boys 7&8 occupied. Say a prayer that I bounce back and can make the trip enjoyable from here on out. Going to have a stent from my kidney to bladder for the rest of the trip. My RT uriter was blocked and the entire kidney was filled with puss. Keep y'all posted on any cool things we do or see from here on out.

Last year I took the wife for the first time on a hunting trip with me to Montana. She stayed with my hunting partners wife and my buddy and I went out backcountry together. When hunting was done my wife and I went up to Glacier and I'm really glad we did. Really beautiful. We were there in late September and it was still quite busy. Make sure to bring your glass with you. Goats and sheep in them thar hills. Cour d'lane is a nice town to visit. Nice shopping for the wife. Nice lake there too, although I didn't get to enjoy it wen I was there.

Saw some if Glacier today. Then headed through Bug Fork and beside flat head lake. Now in Missoula headed south. Feeling much much better .
