Suggestions for hunting snacks in backcountry

Cliff bars, big game jerky/pepperoni sticks, gorp, granola bars, fruit such as oranges, fruit snacks....to name a few.

So basically any snack you can think of that sounds good to you and you can pack into your bag for your hunt it good to go

One of my new favorites is a packet of Justin’s squeezed onto a sprinkle donut flavored Redcon1 MRE protein bar. 460 calories if I remember right.

Like others have already mentioned, salami, jerky, and hard cheeses are hard to beat. No boiling water no waiting on mystery products to rehydrate, just pull a pocket knife out and eat away.

For dinner thou?

There have been times where I have gone a couple days straight on it. There are some nights I just dont feel like cooking and just want to go to sleep asap, a chunk of cheese and a small stick of salami will hold me over into the next day pretty good.
I usually pack a couple Mountain Houses just to mix it up for some variety, but if I'm running low on water for the night and do not plan on filling back up until morning I will not use the Mountain House meals. I hate not having water to drink in the middle of the night or not having any for coffee, a morning without coffee is a bad thing for me and things around me sometimes.
Caffeine rage maybe?🤔

Check out the Green Belly bars. They taste great and do not get all sticky when hot and are very filling.


With that said, I used to love them but I've found out I have a slight peanut allergy as I've aged and can not eat them any longer. So I'm on the search myself.

My favorite is a tortilla full of dry salami and smoked gouda cheese.

I roll up about 20 of them before the season. Wrap them in press-and-seal and aluminum foil then freeze them in gallon bags. When it's time to go, I just grab two per day and whatever other snacks.

Lately, I've been killing the nature valley almond butter biscuit sandwich deals. They are absolutely delicious.

The BH sandwiches are good but they get pretty leathery after you smash them for a week. I found one at the bottom of my backpack a couple weeks after a trip last year. I didn't get sick but it wasn't a culinary highlight either.

So what’s the longest you guys go with cheese and salami in the back country? W sharp cheddar I begin getting nervous at day 3 in 60 degree temps.
Maybe I’m over paranoid...

I can usually go two to three days straight on it if I'm also including some dried fruit with it for something sweet. After that much time though, I need something different to avoid the burnout and that's when the mountain house meals will come out or a cliff bar or two.
Ive had hard cheeses that have lasted a week with no bad affects, but it usually does not make it past day five in my pack. Maybe someone with more knowledge on food safety will chime in on what the temperature danger zone is.
There is a pretty good grocery store down the street from where my wife works and they have a huge selection of hard and soft cheeses from all over the place. I just ask my wife to get the dryer harder looking cheese that is not some weird off the wall flavor. I keep my salami and cheese in a paper bag to avoid the sweating that will happen in a plastic bag.
As far as the salami goes I make my own, most of the stuff you get in stores is nothing special in my opinion.

the day or two before a big hike trip i will pound the protein and generally eat like a pig. I figure I am gonna lose a few lbs on trip I usually make a few sandwiches for day one . lots of jerky3-5 lbs for next couple days , trail mix .dried fruits, cheese ncrackers . ,granola bars, maybe a couple of those tuna snack packs. a few mtnhouse meals. always a couple snickers bars and lara bars , they are nasty but filling. berries if I happen across some . if I kill, I will generally treat myself to a good steak meal before heading out. I tend to bring plenty of food but don't really mind starving the last day if neccesary.
