Suggestions for a fire extinguisher to keep in vehicle

Looking for recommendations on a general purpose fire extinguisher that I would leave in the vehicle. I say general purpose but certainly it would need to be able to put out an automobile fire. I’ve been involved with those fires and they’re pretty damn scary.

What do y’all recommend?

Yeah, there’s nothing like seeing flames shoot out of your hood to get the blood flowing. Been meaning to do this but definitely want to have this before I go on my road trip.

Yeah, when I was a young teen, I had an old jeep Wagoneer. Sometimes when you’d run out of gas you’d have to pour a little gas to the carburetor. Unexpectedly, it burst into flames. My old man came running out with a fire extinguisher and saved the day. Still made it out camping with my friends that night, but never would forget that I didn’t know what to do because I was frozen in panic. Taught me the importance of coming up with a plan. Very reasonable to keep a fire extinguisher on hand.

Bigger would be better, but not practical. You will only put out a small vehicle fire with these. Once fully engulfed, it’s gone.

And don’t neglect maintenance. Any dry chem extinguisher left in a holder, particularly in a vehicle mount will pack all the dry chem into the low point, unless you pull it and rap on the side with something like a rubber mallet To loosen it up. Once or twice a year, toss the extinguisher every 5. Use it for a informal training session.

I had a almost bad deal here in California about three weeks ago.way to close to a big problem.
With all the rain we had feed 4 feet tall on my deer lease.Catalytic converter is only 18 inches off the ground.Luckily it ended with only a smoldering mess.The next day I ordered half a dozen fire extinguishers.They are in all my rigs now.

Buy one with a metal head they are less likely to leak over time. Use a secure mount some where close to the driver door.

I've needed mine twice. 2.5 are easy to mount but not much powder basically two squirts. I added a another to the roll bar.

One is none, Two is one. And the metal head ones are a good idea. Still, I replace them every 5 years. Had a small vehicle fire I was going to catch with my 2.5 lb unit. Hit the trigger and nothing. Nothing, and there were just then flames rolling out from under the hood.
Gauge showed full too, and it was about 10 years old. Car was lost by the time Fire department showed up.

I keep one of these “ABC” type from Amerex in my canopy. I mounted it up on the bars so it wouldn’t get buried by the other stuff in the truck bed. I keep another in a sportsman’s tote strapped down in my truck. Along with a sturdy short handled shovel, a small forest axe and a arborist style saw. Not that those things are going to be helpful in a vehicle fire.

I keep a dry chem mounted in front of the drivers seat with a Desert Does It bracket. It works well. Easy access and never gets in the way.

Bigger is better. I've encountered 2 roadside fires in the last 10 years. The first one I was carrying a 2 lb extinguisher and that wasn't enough. Had to finish that one with my shovel.

The second I had a 5 lb extinguisher and it put the fire out, but I wished I had a little more juice. I carry a 6 lb in my car and a 15 lb in my pickup now.

I use a regular household one and a "fire extinguisher car quick release bracket" which can be bought on Amazon. I know they make fire extinguishers especially for cars but I think any is better than nothing.

That's pretty cool, looks useful and portable enough for camping/outdoor activities too.

I discharged a 10 pounder trying to help this lady. It didn't help.
