I'm not sure if this will fit the bill for you or not, but I got a mountainsmith LT not to long ago and used it for the first time last night.

Worked great and held up well in the wind even though I didn't have it set up 100% correctly. It is also way under your budget

X2 copper spur 2 Find used one on here or ebay for much less probably

X3 for the copper spur awesome tents I have a 2 and 3 person tents. Pretty bomb proof tent I actually slept three in a three person granted it was crowded but very doable. The dual vestibules are nice especially if you're with someone. Also nice by yourself for stashing extra gear can find a used one for much less than your budget.

Thanks, for the price, weight and durability I am leaning towards the Tarptent Rainbow Double.

Big Agnes Scout UL2P with footprint on Camofire.com right now for $199. I have no experience with it, but thought I'd throw it out here. It shows 2#-5oz plus 4oz for the footprint. It does use trekking poles. I really like my REI Quarter Dome 2P and so far has been bulletproof enough.

Tarptent in Desert.jpgHere's my Tarptent Double Rainbow this weekend, pretty roomy for one lots of room for gear under vestibules. You could save some weight with the single, little narrower and zippered on one side only, like the versatility of being able to open either side though. He has some pretty cool models been thinking of trying one of the smaller lighter ones.

Double Rainbow is a solid option. My hunting partner has one and it is a nice tent. We had some bad winds in MT this year, really bad. His tent is the only one that survived the trip and was no worse for the wear. Pretty much destroyed my Western Mountaineering tent and our other partner's BA Scout. I'm buying a Tarptent this year. Just trying to decide which one.

Just curious to see if your friend used trekking poles in the wind? I had mine in really bad winds and it was being flattened, bent a few sections of the pole, got in and added the trekking poles and a couple more lines front and back and it held up great after. Thought for sure it was gonna at least lose some stitching, only thing that happened was one pole poked through the pocket on top with all the flapping, been in decent rain since and hasnt bothered me so havent patched it yet. The trekking pole option is great and makes a big difference when needed.

Yes was using trekking poles. The front one poked through the top pocket and then tore through the reinforced area into the fabric. His got flattened with the trekking poles. It is ruined. Had to gerry rig to keep it up for the remainder of the trip.
