Street Rods/Old Cars - anybody have one?

I've got a 1979 Pontiac Trans Am. My dad is a mechanic and a huge Pontiac guy, so we bought it as a roller to be my project car during high school. He had a Pontiac 455 and some 6x heads sitting in my grandma's barn that needed to be rebuilt, so we did that during my senior year and put that in the car along with a Turbo 400. It originally had 4.10 gears, but we swapped the rear end out with 3.42s to make it more drive able because the goal was to take it on longer drives. It is mostly rust free, but is starting to bubble on the rear quarter panels. Whoever painted the car before we got it did not do a great job with prep or letting it cure because the paint is cracking in the high stress areas and the plastic portions of the front end, so that will need to be redone at some point.

My long term goal for the car is to turn it into an auto cross car with the Speed Tech Grand Touring Suspension kit, Tremec T56, a 6.0 LS build, etc. Hunting has taken the priority for now though, so that build will have to happen slowly over time. Brakes and tires make the biggest difference with autocross from what I understand, so I'll start there and get better at racing before dumping a ton of money into the car.

Fun side note: the glovebox door is signed by Burt Reynolds
Beautiful car. As a guy who turned a 68 firebird into an autocross car that I never autocross, I can't suggest you reconsider that plan enough. The loss in ride and comfort is not worth it. Keep it old school!

Thank you! What I didn't mention in that post is the even further down the road second part of that plan. My dad's high school car was a 1971 LeMans with a 455 and a Muncie 4 speed that he built in his high school shop class. Unfortunately he sold it (wishes he never did), so I'd love to find one to swap the 455 from my Trans Am into and kind of replicate his old car. So then I would have the best of both worlds. We'll see if either part of the plan ever happens though. Saving up for an Alaska moose hunt and a wedding have taken priority.

My dad has a 1969 Firebird that he started a Pro Street build on in the 90's and never finished (kids, life, etc), and now he wishes he'd kept it more driveable as well. It'll still be a sweet car once it's done, but like you said, there is an appeal to keeping it old school. His current project that he's more excited about finishing is a 1974 Gremlin X that is more of a pro touring style build, so it'll drive like a modern car. We bought it part way through a complete restoration, so it had been painted but was otherwise a blank slate. So now it is getting an LSA swapped into it haha.

I'd love to see pics of your car if you have any!

1969 Chevelle.jpg

My 1969 Chevelle 396 SS 4spd Muncie. Owned this a couple of years and it's been unbelievably fun to own and drive. Problem is I really have NO place to store it and take care of it. So sadly it's up for sale (or will at least be back on the market come spring time).

I'd have to disagree with you there. When I bought the Chevelle I posted earlier for my mom, it was all stock except for a GM Performance 350. It wallowed all over the place and stopped like a loaded freight train on a downhill grade. The Speedtech stuff he mentioned is amazing, and makes her car ride like a Caddy. The AFX spindles alone take the handling to a place stock stuff can only imagine. You can easily take Speedtech parts and make a car ride really, really well without tuning it to the edge of drivability like a dedicated auto-x car. I bet with some minor tweaks your Firebird could ride good enough to pleas a 70 year old lady like my mom.
