Random question - I am going to buy a new pair of boots for a trip I have planned next year as I would like to start breaking them in and doing some hikes in them. However, I also have a lot of weight to lose in the meantime (looking to go down from 270 to about 180 or so). Has anybody who lost this amount of weight noticed their footwear fit differently?

If you loose 90# of body fat everything will fit differently. I dropped around 30# and my gloves fit more loosely.

Thanks - I'm obviously not buying any of the clothing, etc. until I get to where I need to be in late summer/early fall. Maybe I'll pick up the boots once I'm closer to my goal as well but still give me enough time to put 100 miles or so on them before the hunt.

You'll likely see a change in how the boot fits based on how much weight you are planning on loosing. The biggest thing you might notice is the arch will likely change and how your foot moves in relation to your ankle, knee, hip and lower back. In short, a lot of things may change. The fit around the ankle and the fit in relationship to the width of the boot will also likely change depending on how they fit now. I would recommend picking up a cheaper pair of boots in the meantime while you are loosing weight and then buy the pair you really want once you loose the weight as a congratulations present to yourself. No one wants to drop $400 on a pair of boots to have to replace them in 3-5 months as you loose weight.

Side note: congrats on the goal! I hope you reach it!

I can’t offer real help on your question because I’m one of the “lucky” ones in the other camp that struggles to keep weight on but, I have noticed that since stepping up to better 🥾 that they seem to be ready to go out of the box (no break in necessary) so waiting until your at or closer to your target weight shouldn’t end in blisters and hot spots due to less time in the new 🥾

I would get the boots as soon as possible, new (expensive) boots will motivate you more because you have committed...

I get the committed part but....

Be realistic. Losing just 50 pounds will drastically decrease the pressure on your feet. Bones and other structures will spread less under less weight. Your foot and ankle volume WILL decrease somewhat, even if length doesn't change. If you're able to lose 70+ pounds I personally have a Franklin to bet that your feet (and boot choice) will change.

My suggestion: Find an old boot. Write your current weight and date on it. When you lose 10 pounds put $50 in the boot and record weight/date. Do that every time you lose 10 pounds. When you hit your goal, buy some new correct-fitting boots. Keep the old boot as a reminder of all the times you had to kick your own butt to lose that weight.

I'm a few months late but I can speak from experience so I figured I'd tack on a reply. I went from a peak weight of 304.8 lbs and am now consistently hanging around 225 lbs. I did this over the course of several years. During this time I went from only being able to fit into size 15 shoes to wearing size 14s and being able to fit into a handful of 13s.

Yes your weight loss will change your boot size. I went from 265 to 195 and by shoe size went from 12d to 11-11.5 depending on manufacturer.
