Thats a neat link. Really crazy, the plane looks like it crashed within a few months ago. 42 year old crash I'd have thought vegetation would have over grown it and be covered in dead fall etc.

Yeah, I sent an inReach message with the crash location to the local game warden (whom I met a few weeks earlier) and he didn’t know anything about a crash. Asked me how old it looked. I said man, hard to say but my best guess was 12-18 months. Boy was I wrong.

There was no bag of money either, we checked. The associated fatalities made it a bummer tho.

Yeah. Apparently it’s hydraulic fluid. Not gore. But it was disturbing nonetheless. You knew instantly that no one had survived that.

Not hunting, but I once came across an old cemetery that had been cut through by a side channel of the Mississippi River. The water had scoured through several graves, not just exposing the bones but literally slicing them like a laser. I guess the silt in the water was abrasive enough to just wear through them.

Brought the Sheriff and Coroner down there and they told me I found a cemetery of the original settlement of Illinois. People in that area had been looking for that cemetery for decades. It was covered by about 6 feet of silt from the river flooding over all those years.

Not necessarily strange, but something I thought was pretty cool: Elk hunting in 2016 I located a bull alongside a rock ledge and used a big rock as a shooting rest. I dropped the bull and packed out half the meat that night. When I returned for the rest of the meat in the morning I went over to the rock to grab my spent brass. Picked it up and realized it was a .300 WM casing as I was walking away. I walked back to the rock and found my 7mm RM casing within a foot from where I picked up the other casing. I thought it was pretty awesome that someone else likely shot at an elk from that same exact spot before me.

I had a very similar experience. We were glassing from a ridge that had a number of spent casings. I am in the habit of always picking them up out of curiosity. To the best of my knowledge this is a 45-70 rifle casing manufactured in May of 1883.

Found a golf ball 2 days ago on a well used elk trail, several miles from any road or trail. I wonder if an elk feeding miles away in the valley floor picked it up and "deposited" it here?

I was out early season quail hunting in a very remote part of Pinal County, AZ. There's always been chatter about certain areas of Pinal to hold drug and human smugglers/traffickers, so that's always been at the back of my mind when hunting some of those areas. This time I was 4-5 miles from any road and came across this dug out hole in the ground. Seemed pretty fresh and seeing the decent sized rocks all around the hole in the ground had me puzzled. Called it into PCSO and gave them the location, but never heard anything back. Haven't been back to that spot since...but quail opens tomorrow and it's supposed to be a banner year....so maybe worth a trip back??

I’ve found several DIY tree stands in the elk woods over the years, but never in a clear cut several miles from the nearest access. The spot held nothing special and only has a thick and overgrown logging road next to it. Top it all off with a griz scratching the heck out of the tree.. only reason I say griz is because the tallest scratch mark reached the bottom crosspiece of the tree stand. I wonder which one came first?

OP that's where the 8th body is buried. On a side note, brass is in high demand right now, that's some good money to be pried out of that tree!

This kind of stuff is really cool. I always like to think about how items left in the woods got there. Unfortunately, all I ever find is trash and illegal salt licks...

I found a several old mining tools once. They were partially buried inside a little cave that was made by a large flat rock leaned against another big rock. I was just looking in there and see something sticking out of the dirt. Thought it was a bone, but when I pulled it out, it was the handle of a shovel. Investigated some more and came out with the head of a sledge hammer, star drill and a pick head. Shovel was the only thing that still had the handle in it.

I have pics but it was from back when you packed a disposable camera in on hunts lol. I will see if I can get the pics scanned so I can add them.

We found this elk hunting in Colorado a few years back. It was a couple miles from the nearest trail, funny thing is that my hunting partner and I are both from right near St. Louis.
