Has anyone out there gotten their hands on both the Chilkoot 0° bag and the Solace 0° bag and compared them head to head?

I currently own the Chilkoot 0° and have the Solace 0° bag on order. I plan to do a head to head comparison with no bias and see which I like better.

I think both these companies make great gear; and I own plenty from both, so it will be an unbiased review. I also have a Western Mountaineering 20° bag and I’m curious how it will compare to them.

I was just curious if anyone has done a similar review to date!

Thanks!

I have never had my hands on the solace but own a chilkoot. Very warm and great for backpack hunts

I’ve seen this one. There is some useful insight, but most sound like they have only used one or the other.

Yeah, I have a Chilkoot and it’s been very warm and roomy - no complaints. However, the ability to use my arms in a sleeping bag definitely intrigues me though. Having to get out of my bag to put my contacts in and take them out, stoke a stove, make some coffee, etc is not always desirable.

I’ll say the chilkoot is roomy, and long as hell. It’s actually too big of a bag for me, I’m just too small and short for it. Certainly works but not optimal.

Sounds like some of the peax features are appealing to you and would make sense.

That’s one of my only gripes with the stone glacier - it’s too damn long. Though, I’m not sure the Peax will be any better, unless the fit helps keep it in place a bit more.

I’m 5’11” and 210lbs, and sometimes feel like I’m drowning in the Chilkoot.

I am really wanting to compare the standard zipper location and SG’s zipper design vs the center zip and the design Peax has. I have had my SG zipper snag before at night and it can be a royal PITA to get unstuck.

I haven’t exactly compared in use but seen both side by side and swapped bags to try.

I have SG 15 my father in law has the Peax 15. The Peax literally loft’s half as much, looks like a scraggly wet dog next to a lofty SG.

I’m a big fan of the Peax features and have enjoyed my Sitka synthetic 38 degree for early season for the exact reasons the OP lists. I get ready in the morning still wearing the bag, eat breakfast, etc. I can do all that without the bag but it’s so much nicer inside the bag.

Opening weekend of rifle in MT this year my father in law and I were camped on the mountain. We switched bags Saturday night for awhile with the caveat if I wanted to switch back we would.
I really don’t know how to describe the Peax but it feels gross compared to the SG. The bag doesn’t feel nice, doesn’t feel warm, the foot box shape doesn’t keep the bag off your feet, doesn’t loft even after I had been in the bag for 30-45 minutes at least nowhere near the loft of the SG before I even get in the bag. PEAX is a fair amount tighter.
I don’t believe these two bags even belong in the same conversation after my short test. Before the features matter the bag has to be warm to temp rating which doesn’t happen without loft. My father in law routinely gets cold when I’m toasty warm in the SG.
A bit disappointing considering I was fending off all the PEAX haters when this bag was released because of the features the PEAX offers and the benefits that come with those features.
We switched bags back and the SG was so comforting to crawl into after being in the Peax for a short time before. The SG almost feels like it floats above and around you.

My estimation is the 0 degree Peax will loft maybe close to your 20 degree WM and will look under filled or not full and fluffy.

Thanks for the input. Once I get the Solace later today, I will let it lay out and loft up. That will be one of the items I’d like to compare. Then, I’ll just have to give it a go and see if it keeps me warm in 10°F +/- weather.

Interested to hear your thoughts on the two. The PEAX bag I got to mess with could be an outlier
I did receive the Peax bag yesterday. After letting it fully loft up, it definitely appears to loft less (around 1”) than the Chilkoot. However, there is definitely some differences in the baffle design. I’ll test them both here soon and get do a full review and comparison of the two! I’ll post a write up on here and plan to do a YouTube video as well for those visual people like myself haha

So, I began comparing the features of the two bags already. There are a few things right off the top that are very obvious to me.

1) Loft of the Chilkoot is insane!
2) The added features for the extra versatility of the Solace are pretty awesome. Definitely would add some creature comforts. The arms free is awesome, but the center zip makes getting in and out of the bag so easy.
3) The Chilkoot is definitely roomier, though the Peax has plenty of room for me (5’11” and 215lbs) to not feel like I’m in a mummy bag or restricted.
4) I prefer the zipper on the Peax 🤷🏻‍♂️ playing with them both a bunch, I never had any issues with it getting stuck. I have had the Chilkoot zipper get stuck while using it on a hunt before.
5) The shells are very different. In looks/feel/and design. The SG shell feels very high quality but also delicate… at least, way more delicate than the Peax. The Peax shell material doesn’t feel as top dollar as the SG bag, but definitely more durable.
6) The parka mode of the Peax is… meh… I prefer the way the Sitka bag does. You can go into parka mode while wearing the bag. Letting you wake up, pop into parka mode, and walk around. The Peax, you have to put it into parka more with it off then put it back on… it’s more of an actual parka like this, but it feels like a big miss to me.
7) Peax quilt mode IS a nice feature. This lets you stretch the time frame for when you can use this bag.
8) Both bags are plenty roomy for me to put on my SG puffy jacket and comfortably zip myself up and lay in the bag - extending the bag even further should things get extremely cold!

Now, all that’s left is to actually USE the bags and see how they handle the cold! I’ll be back!

You can really see the difference with those “pin tucked” SG baffles and I can’t even believe the difference in loft. Just seeing that I’d can the PEAX, it just looks so incredibly insignificant compared to that SG bag. If that peax one ever lofts up post another photo please.

Cool comparison - super practical, especially the parka mode stuff, thanks for putting it up.

The Peax has definitely lofted up more since the photo. I’ve had it laying out for a couple days now. It’s still not near as e lofted as the SG, but it’s not as sad looking as it was originally! Honestly, I think the storage sack for the Peax is too small, it’s more in between a stuff sack and a storage bag. Not near as roomy as the one for my SG or my WM bag. I purchased an after market storage sack that is way bigger.

I’d be curious if you were to compress both into a similar size stuff sack or even compression sack how long it takes each to loft or if there is a significant difference. Something like within 30 min to an hour the SG lofted fully. Does the Peax get there in 2 hours?, 3? Or take all day/night?

I’m hoping to do a sleep test with the bag tonight. Supposed to get down to 10° here with a 4° windchill. After that, I will definitely look into this! I’ll stuff them both into a stuffing sack for 24 hours and see how long it takes for them to rebound and get back to full loft.
