Trying to decide between a Steripen ultra and the classic. I’m leaning towards ultra because I like the idea of being able to recharge it, but there are a lot of bad reviews on it. Curious if anyone has first hand experience with both.

No experience with the ultra, but I’ll throw in a vote for the classic. I’ve drank some very questionable water treated with the classic and never had an issue. Never had any issues with batteries or it not coming on

I started using the Ultra last year as backup to the Sawyer squeeze system of which I'm satisfied with during early to mid-season hunts. I added the Steripen Ultra to cover my bases during colder weather hunts and/or if the water source looks "really really bad".

Have had zero issues with the ultra in the last 3 years. The ultra and classic are the two most recommended. I believe the mini is the main one with issues.
