Hey folks, I'm in the process of putting together my first western centric rifle. I have a lot of experience with eastern rifles and optics well suited to the area I live, but not much experience when it come to longer range set ups. I am looking to purchase a rifle scope that fits the rest of the rifle and its purpose, hoping to get some input and guidance from more experienced guys here.

Here is some info on the rifle, Tikka action, Pure Precision Altitude stock, 25" Preferred Barrel Blanks Carbon in .25-284. Looking to use the rifle for anything less than elk, antelope, whitetail, black bear, mule deer, out to about 400 maybe 500 yards max if I get enough experience to feel comfortable.

Current optics I'm considering
Steiner H6Xi 2-12x42
Steiner Predator 8 2-16x42
Trijicon Credo HX 2.5-15x42
Leupold VX-5HD Gen 2 3-15x44

What are some good reasons to choose one over the other? Is there a much better option in this general price range that I am leaving off the list?

Good luck with your selection process. I will be interested to hear. I think Leupold gets some attention here for randomly losing zero some people report. I have not had that problem, but my Leupold stuff is older. So no help here.

Thanks, I think the easy button would be the Trijicon, but trying to keep an open mind and consider other less common brands. Thinking about the Zeiss V6 2-12x as well.

I just went thru a bunch of scope stuff with a skeptical eye.

Steiner reviews didn't impress me.

The trijicon might be the best of the bunch on the list there.

I ended up buying a S&B T96 2.5-10x50 off EuroOptics - it's more of a low light scope. No-one seems to complain about S&B for anything. Am using it as a set & forget scope, not dialing.

EuroOptics had a S&B Klassic for $1350-ish. Be very hard to beat that in the price bracket.

Don't forget the Rokslide scopes.

Would you show me the “not all that” reviews of the Steiner please?

To the op, love my h6xi’s. I tried the predator 8 and they had tunneling and were not near the quality of the t6 and h6 lines.

Had changed my wording but you caught it in between.

I had spent a lot of time searching out reviews for multiple scope brands and stopped if found something that triggered me to stop.

Was something like eye pieces falling off a scope model if my memory serves right. I didn't bookmark the reviews or anything. Just moved on to the next brand i was considering.
