Just found out I drew a Steens Mtn tag for Oregon this fall. Spend 11 years applying for the tag. anyone have any experience with the unit?? I know the wilderness in the southern half draws some attention, but is it worth the effort to get in there? What about weather during the season Sept 28-Oct 9?

I've had the tag and will be drawing it again next year. Everyone says it's not what it used to be, but there are still some good bucks around. You will definitely have your work cut out for you to find a good animal. The last time we hunted the unit we scouted for two days in shorts and t-shirts. On opening morning I was sitting up high on a ridge watching a storm roll in, by noon there was 2" of snow/sleet on the ground that made the footing tricky in getting back down. We didn't hunt the second day due to poor visibility. By the third day of season there was 4" of snow, but by the end of the fourth day the snow was gone. It's a fun hunt with some beauty that you won't see anywhere else. Send me an email at hankinsjd<at>gmail.com and I will give you some specifics. Good luck!
