Stationary Base Layer

Who uses a thin next to skin base layer for stationary (e.g., tree stand) hunting? I’ve been using a medium weight merino for years but have thought about trying one of the new Sitka Core 120 merino crews under it or the heavier FL furnace when really cold.

I get a little sweaty underneath my pack on the walk in if I get in a hurry and I’m thinking the thinner next to skin layer may help with that.

I use the Sitka 120. Personally, I find that I'm warmer with a light base and use loftier second and mid layers. I'm completely sold.

I really don't care for heavyweight merino. I think it's a fad and marketing mostly. Not that it's not warm, just that it's not as warm as a more lofted synthetic over a light merino. Which is lighter, breathes better and is more durable. They are super expensive for what you get too.

I echo this. Similar to hiking and glassing. If you wear a base warm enough for the sit, most likely you'll be too warm on the walk. Fine with merino if you don't mind the moisture. I usually prefer a light, quick-drying base with layers to add after the hike.

I walk in “cold” with a thin merino base layer and maybe Kelvin Aerolite vest. After I get in position and start cooling down I might add a thicker merino layer or Ambient. Puffy may e after that.
