Stashing suppressor on multistate trip including CA

Just sat through a seminar with Coppersmith about this today. My understanding of what he said is as long as you aren’t in the state longer than 6 hours with it in your possession you can travel through with it.

I recommend you talk to someone that knows the actual law.

California is a do not travel state, you’re better off being an illegal with a pound of coke and no drivers license than an upstanding citizen with a legally owned suppressor.

Could one rent a safe deposit box just outside CA and legally/securely store the suppressor until returning?

🤷🏻‍♂️ Just relaying what I was told today and also advised to ask someone that knows that law.

Hahaha guys wow, this thread went off the rails quick. To be clear I’m not asking how to break a law. I am pointing out a problem and looking for a practical way to comply with the law, while still using my suppressor in neighboring legal states. I assumed others had encountered the issue and was just curious how they handled it. I was thinking more like a bank or train station lock box in a suppressor-legal state or something. But I guess I could:

a) Never go to California, the intended destination
b) Toss it in the woods somewhere
c) Stick it up my ass

I realize it’s possible that the ATF has dedicated some manpower to watch my every move just in case I might break a state law that the ATF does not enforce, but I am not too worried.

I’m thinking I’ll probably just mail the suppressor home if I take it. Thanks all!

The multiple choice format really brings this full circle.

I think a lot of big decisions could be made with a) b) and c) as you have them written. (Save "the intended destination" part)

Keep us posted on your decision. 😃

OP, a locked container that only you have the key to in a suppressor friendly state should keep you legal. Question is, do you have anyone you can leave that container with? You could see if there is a FFL/SOT that offers secure storage and call them to make sure everything would be kosher. That would be my first choice if it can be done with an NFA item (I don't know). A safe deposit box might work, but the bank might prohibit firearms or you might need to have an account.

I live a few miles away from Illinois so I’ve been here before. I picked up the phone and called the IL State Patrol to see what was permissible. They said long as it’s locked in your vehicle and you’re traveling (I believe he said “interstate travel”) there shouldn’t be a problem. I also shot a match with a guy was in IL law enforcement that confirmed what I was told.
The travel definition is poorly defined.

You might need a lawyer, but can probably get charges dismissed if on the interstate only. Pain in the ass though, and some LE will press charges just to make your life miserable.

Might be able to get charges dismissed if you pulled off the interstate to get gas.

Probably cannot get them dismissed if you stay the night in the state.

Many years ago (past the felony statue of limitations more than 3 times over) I took a long road trip that had me spending a week in CA and hitting both coasts. I didn't think much of it, and left a handgun locked up in an S&W box in the car while in CA. Knowing what I know now, I would not do that again. The risk is not worth it and mathematically, I my well being was exposed to more risk on that trip from bringing the gun than it was from a situation where having it might have saved me. I certainly wouldn't do it for a suppressor with zero meaningful risk reduction from having it.

I've seen enough vehicle searches to assure you that it's not hard to find a place.. Unless Commifornia has dogs that can pick them up on a free air sniff?

Maybe I'm reckless but I can't imagine even pondering this for any longer than it takes to stuff something into seat padding.
