Starting with 7mm Rem Mag, need suggestions

The Hodgdon website shows 66 gr of H1000 is max with a 160 projectile, but then lists 70 gr as the max with a 162 projectile.

It's all about bullet design and potential bearing surface on the different bullets but 4 grains is a pretty wide gap. that's like a 6% difference. I never noticed that.

In standard CYA I'm going to say, work your way up with the 160 data and if you're not seeing the classic pressure signs then maybe it's worth working up some more. A ladder load method might be beneficial with such a wide gap and potentially reduce the amount of components needed. It's not as statistically significant as other load methodologies but for hunting still an option.

With what you have I'd go with H1000 first and then H4831. H1000/160 Accubonds is a very good combo in my Tikka 7mm Rem Mag. I have been using Hornady brass for the most part with good luck. I just got some Peterson brass, so I'm about to do a load work up again. H4831SC was super accurate, but slower velocity than I wanted with the 160's. RL23 has proven to be a top performer for me with 160's and 162's as well.

Fwiw I use 71.4grains h1000 with 162 eldm in Hornady brass (have some Peterson after one more firing with Hornady). No pressure signs at all, but obviously work up.

Work it up, I'm using almost 70 grains of H1000 with 180s.

As suggested NOSLER. 160 grain Accubonds will do well. I load 61.5 grains of IMR 4831 in my Sako A7, 7MM RM. This accounted for a Shiras moose last Nov. BTW, my buddy had the tag used my Sako. One and done. Party over and all the work commenced.
If you cannot find 160 Accubonds I would consider Hornady 162 grain SST. These shoot very well also. I hoard my 160 Accubonds as they are difficult to find. Pictured is my Red Stag that it took in New Zealand with my Remington 700, 300WSM using hand loaded 180 grain Accubonds. Again, one and done. MTG

Can’t go wrong with H1000! H4831SC would be my second choice and I have also found it to be a lot easier to find so keep that in mind.

I Reload my 7 mag with IMR 4831 works for my 270 as well. I’ve got it worked out to where it’s very reliable for me so I haven’t tried a lot of other powders, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

I run H 1000 and Remington primers on my 160 gr AB’s. However I’m going to start working up a load for 4831, because I am having a hard time sourcing H 1000.
Might even try Hornaday ELD-X 162’s
