Springfield Waypoint 6.5 prc gun and company problems

It's unfortunate that they've botched their handling of the issues with that caliber so badly. I've got several Kimber Montanas that I bought due to how much I liked the first one.

I really like my 6 Creed Waypoint, but can't say I'm game to try many others due to their obvious customer service issues.

I can say i've owned a waypoint in 6.5 PRC for a about 12 hours after reading this thread! I bought my 6.5 PRC this past Saturday afternoon and returned it the next afternoon after getting it home and running into the same hard feeding and failure to eject problems so many of you guys have had. The next morning I started searching the web and found this thread and my new gun high was quickly gone. I tried all of the magazine tweaks, cleaned everything and re-oiled the action multiple times to no avail. I really didn't want to go down the rabbit hole with Springfield after reading all of the frustrating commits about their CS.The shop I bought the gun from had two 6.5 PRC's on the wall and I was hoping mine was the lemon, not the case though. Neither rifles could get a round out of the receiver. I showed them all of these commits and they refunded my money and will send both back to Springfield. I really liked this rifle so I'm pretty bummed Springfield hasn't owned up to a obvious flaw in there waypoint lineup. Now i'm back on the hunt for a new 6.5 PRC.
I own a couple of Coopers one in 6.5 Creed and the other in 6.5 PRC. These are niche rifles and while they are fine guns, their cost has gone out of sight. If I were to purchase a 6.5 PRC tomorrow with 2K (cost of a Waypoint +-) I'd spend that money on a Seekins.

Some dude at the match I shot this weekend had the chassis seekins in 6.5prc. Sweet rifle. He let me shoot it and I really liked it. He was kicking himself mid match though. I've never seen anyone shoot PRS with a 6.5prc. I think he was more used to NRL Hunter matches. But good for him for using what he had.

I was just about to pull the trigger on a waypoint in 7 PRC. Has there been any negative feedback with that prc or has it only been the 6's?

Has anyone tried one of these in their Waypoints to see if there was improved feeding compared to the Magpul mags? These are now listed as options on the Springfield website, at least for short action models.

Purchased a Springfield Waypoint in 6.5 PRC earlier this year and had the EXACT same issues with brass scarring and ejection that OP described. Moreover when cycling the action I had a round get stuck unfired in the chamber.

I sent it in and they said it was a headspacing issue. Customer Service seemed solid.

The brass scarring was from the 300 WSM magazine they provide with the gun. Dremel polished the feeding edges of the mag myself which mostly eliminated that issue. However, the move is to reach out to @HawkinsPrecision for one of their Hunter DBM’s. Nick is very helpful.

To date, the rifle is extraordinarily accurate and ejects fairly consistently with shot brass when running the bolt with authority.

However, given the above and the fact that even my friend’s Ruger American cycles better, I can’t wholeheartedly recommend the Waypoint for someone in the $2k range. I would look to the new carbon fiber lines from Fierce or Bergara released this year. Looking back, I should’ve just built the dang thing myself with the AG Composite Alpine Hunter stock they use.

To overcome this issue, did you also have to file down any part of the receiver ? Mine is having the same problem but getting hung up on a sharp corner on the back end of the ejection port.

I just feel like paying this type of money this rifle should not have these issues ….. considering selling

Hey Guys,

Sad to report identical issues in a new 30-06 2020 waypoint. I was hoping a slick feeding round like the 30-06 would feed fine, but not the case.

I purchased last week. It arrived this week at the FFL. They wanted to start up the paperwork but I asked to inspect the rifle first, mostly to make sure it was a 30-06 and not some other chambering. It was a 30-06 and came with a MagPul magazine. I inserted the mag and it was beyond rattling- it was moving. And this was after the catch engaged.

The Magpul magazine has almost 1/2" of vertical play even after snapped into place, to the point the bolt can't travel forward if the magazine is pressed fully upward, as could happen on a rest. The bolt scrapes along the feed lips of the magazine. Conversely, if the magazine is pulled downward all the way, there is a 1/2" gap between the front lip of the magazine and the feed ramp. I guessed would make proper feeding of the cartridge impossible as it would be fed straight into the magazine well and not make the angle to the feed ramp. I confirmed this and had a jammed cartridge with a scape along it because the cartridge couldn’t make the angle and got scratched by the bolt that travelled along the rails.

The Springfield operator lady said the techs were out for the day. So I called Magpul to make sure that it wasn't an issue with an undersized magazine, and the tech confirmed that this is a consistent problem with these 2020 Waypoint rifles, and this has occurred with multiple magazine suppliers and not just Magpul. He stated (not sure of the truth of this so don’t quote me) that Springfield has their own magazine well dimensions and these are outside of AICS specs.

So I didn’t complete the transfer. I emailed the online store I bought it from and requested a refund. They talked to Springfield and Springfield said that MagPul magazine is a “Gen 1” mag and there is a “Gen 2” mag they are sending me that should solve everything. I have my doubts but will report back.

These are captured from the video I took and sent to the gun store and that they showed to Springfield. 1st photo is mag pushed up. 2nd is mag pulled down.

Go figure….. it’s never Springfield’s issue. I don’t know how they can deny they have a problem anymore.

That is crazy….. how are they able to feel good about selling a rifle at the price point they are asking with the issues they obviously have.

This is a sincere question- how can ANY amount of quality control let this out the door? I put the mag in, and within 2 seconds realize there is an enormous problem. They don’t even do that much before shipping them off?

Can’t these companies cycle the gun with 10 cartridges to make sure they feed and chamber? Then shoot three rounds to make sure it goes boom? Just that much would catch so much of this.

I say companies because I also had a Christensen Ridgeline that should not have made it out the door.

It makes sense why companies like seekins precision abd tikka are just absolutely killing it in the rifle industry.

And I’d imagine it’s a balance between not having enough skilled help and needing to get products out the door because at the end of the day they are still a business. This Doesn’t necessarily make it right though.

I did not. Although I don't know what all Springfield did when I sent it in.

And agreed. I'm still rolling with this rifle each season, but would never recommend it.
