Spotting scope…. Cover or no?

I have the neoprene cover on the scope and when it gets put into my backpack the outer flap covers it as additional protection.

I've covered every scope I've ever had. Both cheapo scopes and expensive scopes. I leave the objective lens cap at home when using a cover. Fatrascal.

For all you guys that are running covers on your spotters, what size motor are you running? Is it gas or diesel? With fuel prices the way they are its gotta be getting expensive running all the different gear you run

Covers work great over lenses for protection from wet and dust. Cover over body protects against rocks and other abuse. Big $ investment to not cover!

I have an electric pickup so it does not cost me anything to drive. When I am low on battery power I just plug into a wall socket and I am ready to go. At least that is what the salesman told me.

I have a neoprene cover, but I don't use it. Reason being, I keep my spotter in a pocket - the cover "grips" the pocket so it doesn't slide in/out nearly as easily as without. If I change how I carry the spotter than maybe I'll put the cover back on.

Neoprene for me, this one. It's a lot of dough for an optic, I'm not sure how much it would actually help prevent damage but it is peace of mind and an acceptable weight penalty. I bought it right before Marsupial brought theirs to market, otherwise I would have tried it instead

I "run" a diesel with a tune. The tune was done, in part, so I could run a neoprene cover with no negative impact to vehicle performance. The tune was cheaper than buying a bigger engine. In the end, I don't even run the cover so my truck is hella awesome, bruh. AND, I can even roll coal! So there's that advantage, too.

I ran a stay on cover on my Vortex Razor 65mm for almost 10 years and it still looked like new, just sold it last week for $750 which is not much less than a new one can be picked up for.

Purchased a Meopta S2 and had a stay-on cover in the mail before the scope even arrived. They are a little bit of a pain when rotating the angled scopes around but well worth it for the protection they provide.

I would say I'm moderately rough on gear, I packed that 65mm Razor hundreds of miles strapped to the side or ridding inside of my pack.

Well I ordered one for my Zeiss, I was fishing to see if anyone had a lot of frustrations with the cons of some cases like limiting focus wheel access or rotation collar knob but since it’s basically unanimous I picked one up.

Have you found a way to still use the rotating collar? I have a neoprene one that is cut out around the mounting foot, but doesn’t allow you to rotate the scope due to that cutout.

I was able to loosen the thumb screw, if you pulled the scope way down to the side it would bind a little but still work. You can also pull out and let the cover go over the thumb screw and reach up inside with your fingers and tighten it. It never really gave me any issues, I had a gen 1 razor though so I can’t speak for the new ones. I don’t have any issues with my old viper or my Meostar either, they kind of bunch up at extreme angles like 90 to the side but I normally don’t use them long at those angles and typically don’t tighten them down that far to the side.

Outdoor Vision makes a nice stay-on cover but only for Swarovski spotting scopes.

My wife has one on her Swaro and it works well for her.
