Spine choice confusion

I’m currently shooting a 21” ilf riser and some #44 carbon foam medium limbs. Pulling about #47 at my 28.5” draw. Seems to be right between a 400 spine and a 340. I’ve been trying a couple different 400 spine options with between 225 upfront, insert and point. Up to 260 upfront. 31” arrow length. I haven’t shot any 340/350’s out of this setup yet, but from some searching it seems many people in this range and decent point weight are running 350’s. Anybody out there with similar numbers have some info would be great.

Some reference points for you....

400 Spine Victory RIP XV shafts, cut to 29", with 200 grain point and 58 grain insert (258 up front) tune perfectly to both my 19" ILF riser with conventional recurve limbs (44# at my 28" draw) and my 51# 3 piece recurve (heavier, slower limb profile)

However, those shafts are way weak on the same ILF riser with Super Curve (X Curve) 51# limbs. My arrows for that setup are 340 spine Victory VAP SS cut to apx. 28.5, with 200 grain point and 50 grain outsert (250 total up front).

You're probably correct that you're right on the edge of the 340-400 spine range, and there are too many variables to predict which is going to work for your setup and shooting style.

Best bet might be to get a .400 shaft (or 2) and start shooting/cutting. If you reach the point where the shaft is too short for your draw length, start over with the .340's....

Awesome, that helps a ton just with some other numbers to reference. I believe my 400’s with a little trimming will be the ticket.

You should be a solid 400 spine at that weight and draw length. I have a 31" draw, pulling almost 55lbs with 280gr up front minimum and I shoot 340s. You are nowhere near that spine requirement. I can drop point weight and shoot 400s out of my setup with no issues. Same with my ILF rigs. If you were a long draw I would consider it, but you aren't.

Why are you shooting a 31" arrow? For point on? That's a lot of wasted shaft length for a 28.5" draw otherwise

My guess is the OP wants a short Point on with the long arrow.

I could shoot an inch shorter arrow but opt for 31" for a shorter PO.

More data points for you; I'm 30" DL, shooting 48-50#, 19" ILF riser, long Uukha Vx limbs....so similar to your setup. 31" arrow, Axis 340 with 75gr insert and 150 gr BH....tunes great....and it shows stiff if I'm shooting 45# or so.

My guess is you are perfect with 400's....though you might be tip heavy.

I would try lowering point weight down below you're current test range- say 150gr . You can also try shimming your strike plate just a tiny bit. You seem to have drank the high FOC Koolaid and have a predetermined point weight you want....but of course perfect forgiving arrow flight overrules that.

As you probably know; Stickbows aren't like the compound guys and their "Arrow builds" There is a small window of what works....best to go with what works....vs what you want to work.

Wasted in what sense? What's the downside?
Other than him using it for point on, what's the upside? Having to go to a stiffer spine? Longer arrows to snag on brush? I see more downsides than upsides.

I have a very similar bow setup. 21” riser, Uukha limbs, #48 at my draw. Beman Centershot 400’s with 225 up front. 28.5” draw. Mine bareshaft tuned at 30.5”
If you can shorten a shaft half an inch and see how they fly. Maybe back off a turn.
I’m not sold on the super high FOC. These things drop like a stone past 25 yds.

I meant more generally but in OP's case, having to change arrows is a compelling argument against, all the reason I need. For me at least I wouldn't lose sleep over an extra inch or two of arrow, but to each their own (and maybe I'm living the blissfully ignorant life of a guy who's never gotten hung up on the last inch or two when it counted :D ).
