To start, I wouldn't over complicate it. Solid boots, thick pants (i like First lite's sawbrush pants), a shotgun, and pack/vest to carry your water and birds. If you have already have a shotgun, just use that -- most gauges work. Use #6-7.5 non-toxic, and be sure to pattern and practice with clays. If you have a backpack, you can start with that, and eventually upgrade to something like a final rise pack. I think the best advice is to start with what you have and the basics. Most important part is just getting out there and to put the miles in.

If using steel I advise using #6 shot. I have had more than I like keep flying after a poof of feathers with #7 steel on quail.
