South Dakota spring turkey

Hello. I am starting to plan for a DIY spring turkey hunt in the Black Hills of South Dakota for Merriam turkey. Anyone have any suggestions or tips? Coming from NY and never laying eyes on the area until I’m there ready to hunt is a little intimidating…

No experience up there, however I always hear of folks talking of crazy weather early in the season.

Birds generally seem to be getting aggressive to the call around May 1st.

Numbers are way down from a few years back. As for tips I’m 0 for 2 so do the opposite of what I did.
