So, I’ve posted a few questions asking where/when/general questions on deer, pig and other random hunting. This might be a dumb question, but is there a “draw” out here like there is in many other western states? Or is it just OTC buy and go? In CA there is around 30 zones... so I’m just curious if there is any tags I should start putting in for now that take X amount of years?

Sorry if this is a dumb question in advance.

Gator is a draw. It will take 3 years of preference points to draw. I highly recommend it but you just missed application season. Im not sure about upstate but in game zone 3 down near charleston there are lottery hunts you can apply for. Deer turkey waterfowl etc. But as a general rule most everythings OTC just buy your license tags and go. Pigs don't require a tag. If you want to hunt public land make sure you get a WMA permit in addition to your hunting license.

^^^^What he said. There are SCDNR Heritage Preserves/WMAs that have limited hunts you can apply for. Ducks, Turkey, Quail will take 2-3 years. I drew a rut hunt on one of them this year on first attempt drawing for deer. Unfortunately it was bad weather during full moon, so nothing going. Shot a pig in the face though.

Lots of NF land you can hunt, just need the WMA permit as stated above. Good deer hunting I would say. Just have to find the honey holes!!! Same for wood duck holes as well

What is a WMA permit, sorry this is all new to me. Is it a draw, OTC or?

WMA=Wildlife Management Area. If you hunt only private ground you won't need it.

I’ll be doing 90% of hunting on NF land. So is it like another tag, or do I need to do something special?

Type in SC DNR Regulations and download the FULL hunting and fishing PDF. It will answer every question.

Everything except gators is available over the counter. Special units have limited draws, but the majority of the state is open to hunting.

There is no closed season on coyotes, armadillos, and hogs; and you can hunt them at night! Compared to most states we have simple and awesome hunting laws, easy to understand and lots of opportunities.

Nope. All you need is your hunting license and big game permit to hunt deer and turkey (turkey tags are three for $5). Add a bear tag for $25. The national forest is free. After all, we own it. 😁

A Sportsmans License is $50 and Includes State Hunting, Big Game, Wildlife Management Areas & Freshwater Fishing. That's the license I recommend, because there are lots of great WMAs to hunt and fish on the same day. Deer at dawn and dusk, fishing in the middle. $10 more gets you your salt water license.

Sounds to me like I spend 100$ and I’m set doing anything and everything I’ll want to do out here hah

Along as your a resident. If nonresident it will be a couple hundred more. There are regions that determine when the seasons are. Lots of deer in the flatlands.

You do have to possess a separate WMA Permit to hunt NF. They are still considered WMAs. Even if they are unnamed WMAs. For example, I hunt the Sumter NF pretty exclusively. It is still considered a WMA (signs all over saying WMA). Still have to have the permit. I just had to re-up mine, think it was $30 for 3 years.

Also, on public land, you CANNOT hunt hogs year-round. You have to hunt with weapons considered legal means of take for the game in season. So during turkey season, this means shotgun or archery equipment.

As said above, download the regulations. It’s very simple when compared to states out west

Yes there are all sorts of exceptions that are detailed in the rules.

And thanks for the heads up on the national forests.
