I am going on my first backpack hunt.
I have been training with my pack and boots.
I am planning on using my Soloman Quest 4d boots.
When I put a heavy load in my pack, I notice a soreness on the outside of my foot.
I have super feet in them and it helps.
I know the Soloman boots are a very light boot and very flexible.
Do I need a stiffer sole boot?

I think it would be hard for people to diagnose the problem over the internet without knowing more. If you are totally new to this type of thing there will be a level of discomfort no matter what when it comes to carrying heavy weights around until your body/feet/mind become conditioned. I also see a trend of people using stiff mountaineering boots to train with which I think is good to certain extent, but its not a bad idea to use a less stiff boot/shoe to build your feet up.

I think the above post is accurate. One thing to note about the Salomon 4d is that they taper quite a bit on the outside of the mid foot. I have a protruding styloid process on the outside of the 5th metatarsal and when it get's pinched in a boot it's really sore on the outside of my foot. Especially under load. It kind of sucks. you might try adjusting the laces or just need a different boot. Again this may not be your exact problem, but it could be.

When above alpine and sidehillin all day or going down steep inclines my feet get soar. I wear asolo boots which are great but if your feet have friction all the time then it takes a long time to build up all the skin on your toes or balls of your feet.

personally I'm not sure how some of you can have a pack with weight and climb around the mountains with a boot with no shank, I'm a firm believer in a boot with a shank when any weight is on my back.
