I looked at these cameras yesterday and talked to someone that was more stupid than me regarding cameras and that is not saying alot. I have watched the videos on the Sony web site and the cubicle set up for the NEX camera at Best Buy and it seems to have alot of stuff with interchangable lenses and alot of different options for the said camera in the different models it comes in. I noticed the NEX3 is out of the display and out to the crowd with all of the other cameras. The two they had in the Sony display where the model 5 and 6 ! When I looked at the web-site there is a model 7. So to make this short have any of you used the NEX series of Sony cameras? When I saw the short video of the things this camera can do I am amazed. Any advice regarding the price? Another brand? The menu options on this camera seem to me to be WOW! Put it on a tripod set it and it will do a time lapse on it's own. This would make me way better in all ways. Bob.

The NEX is a great camera that's for sure but the big question is
.... what do you plan to use it for? Are you backpacking it in or just a normal every day camera?

If backpacking in with it, I'd actually recommended the Sony RX100. Its a Point n Shoot but an amazing camera for putting in your pack and NO lens changes. Much smaller.

If normal use, it's a awesome camera and will give you very close to DSLR quality photos. If your not a camera nerd you could save some cash and get the NEX 5 or 6. The images will be on par but not the newest software as the 7. The lens will fit all the NEX generations too.

There is a good article on the NEX 6 over on Backpacking light. I have read the 3 and 5 are not that great. Like Armyjoe stated, you need to figure out what you are realistically going to do with it. The RX100 is a bit more compact, the NEX 6 has more bells and whistles but a little heavier and bulkier. I was all set on picking up the NEX 6. Sent my wife down to take a look at it as it would be “her” camera too. The sales guy started steering her towards a DSLR. Now we (wife and I) have been in negotiations (months) on which to get.

I agree with Joe - the RX100 is great if you want an incredible point and shoot.

I carry a couple lenses backpacking and love my NEX-6. Long story short, my wife and I both bought new cameras last year (she got the 6 and I got the NEX-7). I quickly realized that her NEX-6 was way more versatile and had better low light sensitivity, so I got rid of the 7 and got my own NEX-6. Love it. Has the same APS-C sensor that many DSLRs have.

The ONLY advantage of the NEX-7 is the higher pixel count, but the NEX-6 was actually developed after the NEX-7 and is great!

If you are not going to be a camera nerd then get a really good point and shoot like the RX100.

I had the NEX 5, 7 AND then the 6.

Sold the 6 and bought the RX100. I'm happy with the decision and wouldn't go back.

The RX is just better for hunting/backpacking, but I had no issues with the NEX either.....just like the size and weight of the RX.

I have the NEX6, so far extremely happy with it. It pulls double duty as my backpacking camera, and general use camera.
Does well in low light, good layout for the controls, not as light as a point and shoot but much lighter (and smaller) than a DSLR....especially with the 16-50mm lens. Again so far very impressed with it.

Because I'm type A and a gear junkie, I'll be buying the new edition RX100 :)

So if anyone is interested in my RX100, PM me, as it will be going up for sale pretty quickly.

I might give you a call on this one man. I can't let you be the only one with a 1 inch sensor :D
