Something Different from Down Under

This hunt was nothing special but it is something different for people who've never seen an Emu egg. Only got 4 small hogs with the dogs and shot a few foxes and hares.

The male Emu sits on the eggs and this one gave the dogs a scare when he popped up. We had a GSP working out in front and he went into a point. He bails the pigs so it was weird that he didn't take off. This dog retrieves the odd duck so I can only imagine what he was thinking when he saw this big bushchook.

We got a few photo's and then the Emu took off about 50m's away so we grabbed a quick pick of the eggs and left him be.

Would make a decent omelette.

Pulled this small sow out of the bed under the fallen tree in the background.

Yeah big drum sticks on them but they are very oily... and it is illegal to harm them.

The illegal to harm them part explains it. I was wondering because most of you guys down under are not bashful about pulling the trigger .

Yeah it is different here. The critters we hunt are not native so in many cases we shoot as many as we see. Things like foxes and pigs are considered pests in most places. Some natives are culled. Thousands of kangaroo's would be shot each day and a lot of farmers will cull Emu's as they wreak havoc on fences and some crops/orchards.

Some native animals populations have exploded with agriculture. To put it in perspective - the local army base is 30,000 acres and has over 30,000 roo's on it.
