If you really want to get into it, then don't let them discourage you. Life has inherent risk, not just western hunting. Just do your best to prepare for issues and problems.

I do most of my hunting alone. Every year my family says those sorta things. While it can be annoying just remember why they say those things. They care about you and want you to come home safe.

My wife is used to me doing a few solo back country canoe trips a year, mountain back packing trips etc. I go live at my cabin in WI well out of cell service for 45-60 days most falls by myself, though swing by the house every 10 days or so for a night to get chores done etc.

She does appreciate that I added an inreach a couple years ago but is otherwise used to the idea that I disappear into back country solo on a regular basis.

Not that I wouldnt mind going with someone but none of my friends have stayed in shape sufficiently to do most of it anymore.

I'm blessed that my beautiful wife enjoys going out to our cabin with me. We've gone out for a couple weeks together often.

I'm about to do a solo hunt out west for the third year in a row. I've hunted out west several times in a few different states over the last ten years. I've hunted whitetail solo in Kansas and Oklahoma most my adult life. The whitetail hunts are usually just day hunts, now that we don't have a cabin in Kansas anymore and not seen as dangerous or risky I guess.

Does anyone else catch grief from your family or friends about doing these hunts alone? I'm only 40 and I'm in good shape and not a new hunter by any means. I always seem to get comments from my wife or Dad like "it makes me nervous" or "I really wish someone was going with you".

I have tire chains, Garmin inreach, the insurance if you have to press SOS and all the usual safety precautions western hunters do. Just curious if anyone else experiences this as well or maybe has an idea how to set people's minds at ease.
I hunt and backpack solo in the Wyoming mountains, and catch no grief. Mrs. Wyo gets it.

Solo hunting is one of my favorite things to do. Some people have given me grief for it, but most seem to understand. I take a bunch of precautions (leaving a trip plan, packing extra layers, extra food and fuel, first aid kit, InReach, bear spray) but there's always risk. For the constant worriers in my life, I try to reassure them that I've done everything a reasonable person could do to limit risk and contain fallout if something bad does happen.

A friend died in a backcountry incident recently, so there's also been some sober reflection going on.
