I saw 4 elk plus a yamaha grizzly in a mazda 4x4 once. It looked like steering that thing was pretty sporty.

86 toyota pickup, it was tight, but I probably could have put another one plus gear if a buddy were with me.

My back and legs hurt thinking about extended trips in a Taco more so than if an elk will fit

Dude, really?
C'mon, man up already.
Haha, that's what I was thinking when I saw the question. Where there's a will there's away, right? In all seriousness, I have a Nissan Frontier (with the short bed) and it's no problem.

I did it in my nissan frontier with a 5' bed. I do have a topper on the back and trailer hitch that held a giant cooler. Me, my gear, wall tent, elk, elk head, and 2 buddies gear (they flew).

you can pull it off no problem. this was spike camp for the three guys.

I will say I took out the factory bump stops and put some sumo springs in and the ride was much nicer, and was cheap to do.
