I am no means a flashlight junkie, but I did spend $ on a few years ago and learned what I like. Did the same on knives. I went Uber Nerd and learned about metal composition while on Bladeforums years ago. In the end the education was worth it.
What I look for in a flashlight/ headlamp. Or what matters to ME.
Dual purpose battery - as long as I can run a rechargeable with the option to switch off to a standard lithium or CR model I am happy. I can always carry a standard spare as my rechargeable is recharging. I’ve also seen many rechargeables’ lock up in the cold.
Light throw matters - for either headlamp or flashlight I want at least 3 powers and they need to have a split light throw. Low and medium should be a narrow flood. 10-25’ and 25-50’ throw. This lights up a general area and give you enough light to work with your hands, not out walk it and not blind you when it hits a reflective object. High should be a Spot or focused flood. The spot option is designed to focus on items at a much greater distance. If done properly you should be able to clearly define an object at 100m. This is very hard to find and generally cost more. I want the spot to be at least 100 meters in distance. Think of “throw” as FOV on a scope.
Red or green light required. I prefer green but red seems to be the predominant color offered. I like this light to be in the medium power with a narrow flood. Throw should be 25-50 ft. NO Spot throws for green or red. Otherwise it looks like you are spotlighting game.
I have not found a single light that meets all my criteria under $100. I haven’t searched the over $100 price point as I just won’t spend that on a light. The two companies that have been the closest are Fenix and Petzel.
I’ve tested 2 or the Sofrins. Neither meet my criteria. I have one more to go.
