I’d say to get a teaching license and pick where you want to live in AK, I believe the state was short like 300 teachers state wide last year, I’ve known guys who just registers for university teaching programs and were able to land jobs just by being enrolled so right off the bat they were making 60k (remember teachers get 4 months off a year, supplement that with a summer gig and you’re doing ok).

but the whole being a felon thing might be a barrier to that.

lol

I think that guy was lying. Starting pay for a new teacher (and one without the certificate would be in that category) is around 42-50k depending on the district.
However, obtaining that certificate and taking that route isn’t a bad idea.

I have been in education for 27 years and I am pretty sure there is a question on the certification request on being a felon. Not exactly what public school systems want on their payroll. Just being honest.

Alright ill ask the question everyones wondering why are you a felon ? That said - anyone can change their life in a minute. My best friend was a convicted felon from trying to evade the police after too many beers when he was 19. Good luck on your quest.

I was working for a guy who I made the mistake of trusting that he would pay me (I was supposed to be payed 1000 plus room and board per month). After 3 years of a hell of a lot of good times, but no paychecks, I told him he could consider his truck my paycheck. The rest is history.

Wow!! You worked for three years without a paycheck. You are not a quitter, and have something that nobody else on this board has. Alaska May work out for you.

Is it wrong that I read that in Joe Dirt's voice? :p ....seriously, come on up....if 8 month winters, the highest cost of living anywhere, and a sausage-heavy guy/gal ratio are your thing, this is paradise....

Go to Wyoming
Save yourself a bunch of logistic headaches and tons of areas that I imagine you could probably buy a cheap beat up cabin in the woods to fix up.... ID and Montana are ruined from Californians and other people in general and WY is the last frontier in the lower 48.

Same with Colorado. Ruined. I figured if I'm now going to have to deal with traffic, douchebags and annoying people from California, I may as well just move to California, which is what I did 5 years ago. My salary more than doubled (Registered Nurse). Sure, rent and taxes are more expensive, but I lived on a tight budget and paid off all my worldly debt in under 3 years. Now saving so I can move somewhere else in the next year or two (Oregon, Montana, Idaho, Utah or Nevada). I'll be taking a major pay cut for sure, but won't be as hard now that I'm debt free and will have a decent downpayment on a house wherever I decide to move to.

California is for sure super expensive, but it's doable to get ahead here as long as you budget and are disciplined. I also don't have kids, so that made living on the cheap a LOT easier. Raising kids and childcare seems to be financially crippling for a lot of people I know out here that have kids.

I see only one problem with your plan.

Everything in Alaska is more expensive that you think and a lot harder. It sounds like you are tough so you will be fine. BUT you better have savings.

Leave the horses in the lower 48 they will be more work than they are worth up there.
