Snagging paddlefish

Anyone here have experience doing it? I'm curious about the quality of treble hook. Lot of trebles are junk so I was wondering if you would have some recommendations. Thx

Fishing rules vary. He is in Montana and there are multiple snagging seasons, I know of Paddlefish and Kokanee. Heck, you can hunt pike with a rifle in Vermont. Snagging is legal in saltwater for salmon in Alaska.

Welp, evidently those that make the laws in Minn don’t think you should.
But Vermont, shooting at the surface of a body of water is a little sketchy. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Legal in Missouri too, on many of the states waters. A good strong #10 or 12 will suffice. Edit to add, buy a lot of them.

We have to use barbless here in OK. We just use whatever they have at the gas station since you’re going to break off a bunch in the rocks. Never had any issues with hooks straightening and they’re going to get dull from bouncing off rocks pretty quickly.

My buddy goes paddlefishing every year up by the confluence. He uses #10 hooks. He didn't mention any brands. Just bring lots of extra tackle like weights.

I was thinking of going with Mustad. Quite a bit more than the Amazon specials but I'm hoping they are much stronger. I don't want a hook straightening on me after casting for several hours. I'm familiar with how to go about doing it because we snag a 100 or so kokanee every year for the freezer.

I'm limited to 8/0 and you have to pinch the barbs down. I plan to use 100 lb braid, so I can put some pretty good pressure on the fish.

I wouldn’t worry about a hook straightening on you. Pinching the barbs will also have no effect on your success. Just remember you’re catching a dinosaur if in Montana. A male makes his first trip up river at an average age of 10 and a female will make her first run up at 17 give or take. The southern paddlefish mature and spawn sooner because of easier winters than those in Montana and North Dakota.

Not sure how you would catch one other than snagging. They are filter feeders and mainly eat zooplankton. I guess you could try a plankton hook and a small piece of plankton?
