Snacks - What to take

Fritos are a staple for me, one of the most calorie dense foods you can bring. 9 ounces crushed up fits in a sandwich bag and provides good snacking for 2-3 days. Also a good fire starter. I mix PB and honey and put them into a Coghlan's 6oz squeeze tube for putting on bagels, a nice lightweight, no-mess way to keep your PB & H. Also do string cheese, salami and dried fruit.

First day or two.
 
The baby bel waxed cheeses will last a long time out of the fridge, esp at temps below 70 deg. We have taken them on 8-10 day trips without issues. I also like reg string cheese and single serving pepper jack in plastic wrappers. Those will get to be funny shaped if they get too warm, but I have never had them mold or otherwise taste poorly during trips of up to a week or more.

I bagged up a bunch of single portions or the peanut butter filled pretzels last summer, and just ate a pkg last week and they were still fine. They do crush easily so be careful how you pack them if you don't want to be eating crumbs.


Lots of good snack ideas listed here already. Whole wheat pita breads are another good carb option. We eat a lot of Lara bars, KIND bars and Costco fruit and nut medley. Trying to eat fewer heavily processed foods, but I have a weakness for Reese's peanut butter cups and Luke loves almond joy so a few of each always make it into our packs too.
 
Here's what a typical lunch bag looks like for me.
~1000cal, ~25g Protein, 11oz.


I know I can do better on cal/oz count but these are cheap to put together and I like the variety of the mix. Not all bags contain the same things but the mix of simple & complex carbs are pretty much the same. Items not used one day roll onto the next.
