Do you see a lot of people smoking cigs hunting? I don’t understand i hear all this “back in the day i killed a 10 point with a cigarette in my mouth” now it’s more about getting winded or what? I’m going nuts.

I hear they’re bad for ya. So is scotch. I’ve been known to indulge in both at camp, but not during the day when I’m hunting.

By “getting winded” do you mean running out of breath? Or having the scent of your stinky stogey picked up by your quarry? Cigs can certainly cause either of those things.

Back in the day, Doctors used to have ashtrays in their exam rooms.

Why are you going nuts?

I usually pack in to drop camp and stay there for 9-15 days. Opportunities for a shower or bath are sparse. Toward the end of the trip I’m pretty sure I’d be winded by game within a mile.

BC goat mountains
I stalked on a Billy this fall on my way to my goat cams, sat a spit distance away while he slept. I wanted him to get up for a photo shoot, but not get up and bolt away, so I lit a cigar hoping it would make him curious, but nothing. 10 minutes later, I decide to smoke my joint (always have one for the top of the mountain), funny thing is not minutes after putting it out, he stood up and came right to me 🤣

I have an old hippy uncle who swore that deer loved the smell of weed, but Iv only proved the goat so far lol.

I always have a story.

About fifteen years ago I was hunting in the Ruby Mtns. I kept running into this cowboy who was trying to round up some cattle in the canyon. We struck up a friendly acquaintance and several times had a smoke (tobacco) while I asked him where the deer were and he asked me where the cattle were. He didn’t have any of his own cigs so he’d bum one of mine. I was sitting on a rock holding my horse’s reins in one hand when he emerged from some willows, and as usual bummed a smoke. I had two cigarettes left but I didn’t mind burning my last ones with this affable fellow so I took them between my fingers and held them out towards him, where he sat still mounted on his cow pony. I was thinking he’d grab one and I’d light the other and we’d have nice smoke in the warm fall sunshine.

Well my horse shot his head out like a rattlesnake and grabbed those two cigarettes, crunched them up and wolfed them down in two shakes of a lamb's tail. “WELL…SHIT!!” We both exclaimed in chorus, venting our consternation and disappointment. We didn’t get a smoke but we had a good laugh.

My horse didn’t show any ill effects. His name was Omar. I have a lot of great memories of his hijinks. He’s been gone about 15 years now and I miss him.

"let's get high and go hunting!"...🙄🤦‍♂️
Great idea what could go wrong!
I dont agree with all laws by any means, but the ones on the books about possession of firearms or hunting while intoxicated in I'm fairly certain EVER STATE...happen to be there for good reasons IMHO.
Save that shit for the of the day when your planted and no holding a weapon or gotta drive anywhere.

I'm regard to smokes in the deer woods...I've heard the same said if spitting chew all around your stand.
I guess it's an unfamiliar smell they dont associate with humans so I could see some curious behavior or slight human scent masking there so to each their own I guess...I'll just stick to playing the wind the best I can.
I think alot of those "shot my biggest deer ever with a smoke hanging out of my mouth" stories are just dumb luck...as probably 80% of hunting for most is simply luck of being in the right spot at the right time anyways. I know first hand plenty of big deer shot in scenarios that simply shouldn't have resulted in that deer being anywhere near the person that shot it 🤣

One my buddies i take hunting smokes. He's the only one I ever seen smoking that I recall. He's also overweight and has bad knees/hips. I enjoy my time with him, buys it's more of a 4 wheeler ride than anything. Not my style AT ALL. But without me, he won't go. So I take him.

I never see people in the field smoking.

The fact that people are still stupid enough to smoke isnt so baffling if you have any amount of public interaction. State in the south and mid west still having over one in five adults smoking.
