I’ve got a savage SA short shank that I’m thinking about turning into a 7saum. I know I’d need a new bolt face and barrel, and there’s probably some magazine kinks to work out, but is a short shank safe for a short mag/prc cartridge or is that a long shank only deal? Haven’t found anything conclusive in my research and I’m very attached to my extremities.

Several reasons. The savage is small shank. Typically the short mags are built on large shanks. Will need to find a bolt head. If you get a savage head you’ll need a new firing pin. A ptg would work but they are hard to find and ptg is a pain. Mag length is a concern but not huge. It’s jut a lot of work when you can get a bighorn action or a tikka action.

My friend build one on a savage short action small shank. The gun smith shouldered the barrel instead of using a barrel nut. The gun shoots great with 180's that fit in the mag good. The savage short action mags are a little longer then other manufacturers short action mags. PTG makes good bolt faces for savage actions. I think you can get magnum bolt faces from midway also.
