No regret. I mainly only shoot 223 and 6cm now. Heck I’ve got a Sako 300wm sitting at the back of the safe that doesn’t even have a scope on it anymore

Haha sounds like your priorities have shifted! Once you get comfortable with .223 and 6CM, it’s hard to go back cheap to shoot, easy recoil, and still super accurate. That poor .300WM is probably feeling neglected back there

I have a gun in every caliber from 223 to 30 and multiples in some. If I'm doing my normal deer hunting around here, I'm grabbing my 6 creed most of the time or my 25. Since coming down in size I've noticed I shoot more often, I'm a much better marksman, and it's way cheaper.

Now with all of that said, I still have that 300prc in the back of the safe that I can bust out and just recently did on an elk hunt when I expected a longer shot. Could I have done it with the 6 creed? You bet. I don't regret using it one bit because it's one of the rifles that I shoot the best. Next season, I'm taking my 25 western and 135s to try out.

I guess you could say I'm somewhere in the middle but trending smaller quickly. When I first started this journey, the smallest cartridge I owned was a 280ai to take these 150lb southern whitetail. At this point my son has dropped more of them with his .223 than I ever have.

I JUST finished a hunt in WY with a great dude. He’d never glassed off a tripod, or shot off a bipod. He talked shit about it the whole time lol. I sent him into a spot I was confident in and he ended up glassing his buck off a tripod, and killing it off a bipod. He didn’t say we were right in how we hunt, but certainly didn’t have anything negative to say haha.

He was just used to hunting by covering a ton of country and snap shooting deer he basically stumbled upon. Was still a VERY successful hunter. There’s just more than one way to skin a cat.

Took that shot a few years ago in Wyoming, 300ish yards, 280AI, 162 ELDX in factory Hornady Precision Hunter ammo. Went from back to front with the projectile resting against the front skin. The front part of projectile fragmented away but the rest of the projectile drove the length of the mule deer. DRT.

You mean a .287 sd rapid expansion type bullet at relatively moderate impact velocity is a good formula?

Amazing to me so many still try to answer headstamp related questions with anything other than sd construction impact velocity related answers. It’s a lot simpler and removes a lot of noise.

That would be my argument, yes, as “heavier bullets going faster” tells you nothing about its construction. Example: a heavy FMJ out of a 22” 243 won’t kill faster than a 77TMK out of a 16” 223.


Get more experience in the field then. Alternatively, do some reading.

You obviously don’t pay much attention to details. I was talking the same construction of bullets. You guys are so upset anyone would suggest that hunters have found the 6mms to be lacking, that it’s funny. If you like them great, all I’ve suggested is every bullet has its limitations, which I would have thought you’d agree with.

My 22 creed freaking slaps. I’d hate to be bull on the other side of an 80 ELDM at 3400fps. Guess what? You can also shoot them twice in 5 seconds and double the wound channel size and destruction lol.

I killed my first buck with this presentation, going dead-away from me, with a shot to the base of the neck.

At 110yds, 150gr 30-06, the impact cracked the skull-cap between the antlers 6 inches above the entrance point, and blew out several vertebrae below the entrance. This angle is a much more viable shot to the neck than side presentations of the neck, IMO, and I'd have no problems taking the shot in the photo short of 200yds, in good conditions.

I’m glad I’m not the only one thinking, “what a great presentation for a head or neck shot.”

My attitude towards the “Texas Heart Shot” is to think, “Excuse me, waiter, I would like my venison tenderloin bloodshot with a side of stomach contents and shit, please.”

No need for a magnum , just a nice bonded bullet, those explosive bullets mean the difference between gut shot and a lethal shot into the vitals

I would guess the absolute destruction of the guts would not feel too good and may even result in some spine damage allowing for a follow up shot.

I would have to agree. I have no experience with Texas heart shots, but having seen wound channels from both fragmenting bullets and bonded or mono bullets, I would hazard a guess that a eldm or tmk up the butt would get the job done just as fast or faster.

It makes an utter mess of the hind quarters, the femurs and hip are usually in dozens of pieces.

People that think deep penetrating, hard bullets are the way for shooting animals heading straight away from them- haven’t tried it very much. The general response from the animal is to sprint away. Lots of times the bullet gets stuck in the stomach when full of grass- even large 338’s. Most of the time you do not get an exit out of the chest, and there is often not a good blood trail. Due to narrow wounding, the femur, hip, and spine are usually unaffected unless directly hit.
Conversely, people that have done it much understand that bullets that penetrate a minimum 12’ish inches and create very wide wounds are much more effective. Put an 130gr TMK into the rear end it basically any animal and it’s utterly destroys the use of their back legs. Animals drop immediately and tend to turn sideways allowing an immediate follow up chest shot.
