Slings for MSR’s (AR-types)

What are you using for a sling and buttstock setup, say for woods carry and wearing a pack? All I find when I search are tactical setups, one point, two point, three point…most of which makes my head hurt. I like the idea of the rifle being accessible from being carried on the front, but what do you do with it when you have to belly crawl under a log? These type of things are what I am struggling with.

I like carrying on a carrier to transfer weight to my hips as much as possible, but in short jaunts I will sling it. As far as in the thick, under blowdowns or low branches I'm pretty much hand carrying.

I have a buddy who makes ultralight padded slings. They are geared towards "tactical" a bit I guess, but are extremely light, and adjustable.

He is one of my oldest friends, a good guy with a high attention to detail and quality. All hand made to order. For a hunting sling, I would ask for a few strips of grippy material in the shoulder area. PM me if you want his details.

Yeah, I am using an old slik-sling, but same type of deal as the exo, kuiu, etc carriers.

Although the slik sling makes pulling out the rifle and fastening it with the pack on pretty easy.

I put my rifle in gun bearer and attach it to my pack. I use a regular sling that’s fastened all the way down against my rifle for when it’s needed. I rarely use a sling, as my rifle is either on my pack or in my hand, but it’s always handy to have one, just in case.

Here is 1 example of his slings. Weight is with extra webbing that would be cut and burned to fit so maybe drop a few 10ths of an ounce.

BFG Vickers Sling.

I cannot see any real disadvantage to running a 2 point adjustable. They are the standard for the AR platform for a reason.

Second the BFG Vicker's sling. The medic style, if you can find one.

Use the rubber bands or Sherrif of Baghdad bands to keep the sling tight to the rifle, if needed.

For off-hand shooting, a Ching Sling is about the best there is.

Something to keep in mind, is that quality 2-point tactical slings almost all come with a feature that allows for 1 handed adjustment, making them extremely flexible in how you use them. Add one or two QD attachment points to change up where/how the sling has the gun hanging, and you can carry your AR just about any way you could possibly want, whether cross-body or over the shoulder, etc.

One I've been working with for a while also has the ability to be used as a shooting sling, where you slip your arm through and wrap it, to steady up the rifle. So far it's been a useful tool for some of the more awkward field-expedient positions:

That looks pretty cool. Those guys should take the time to made a video or take some more pictures. I’m not the only one who has trouble with slings and buckles.

Any 2-point with a quick adjust feature is what you seek. For the price the v-Tac and BFG seem to be the most common. I prefer the padded v-Tac after years of running a non-padded. . .
