I currently own the Slik Pro CF 634 with a benro S2 head and I'm wanting to get a more compact set up without sacrificing too much total height. Am I crazy for thinking of downsizing? any thoughts on Slik light CF 522 and 635 from people who own or have owned? open to suggestions on compact setups that you can still somewhat stand and look through angled spotter with.

Have you tried removing leg sections from your 634? That plus going to a lighter ball head would save you a lot of weight but still be stable with the thicker legs.

I haven't because I'm not super concerned with weight since my packgoats keep my pack light, I'm more or less just interested what everyone's experience with the more compact tripods have been and if its worth switching

Both the 635 and 522 have VERY thin bottom leg sections. You'll notice we don't carry them anymore for that reason. And FYI we'll be bringing back the Slik Pro 624 CF in the next month or two. We worked a deal with Slik for exclusive access to this tripod. It's perfect for guys who like to glass from the side of a hill sitting down. Here is a link for reference.

Love the 624! Good to hear you'll still be selling them.

If you like to glass standing, the small amount of extra weight and size will far outweigh the sore back from bending over while glassing in my opinion.

624 is nice, but for just a few ounces more its nice to be able to stand behind your tripod.

I am mostly a deer and Turkey hunter from the northeast. Most of my glassing is done from high on steep ridges looking into big agricultural bottoms.
Even seated I really like the length of the legs on my 634. I usually run my downhill leg near fully extended. This allows minimal if any use of center column.
I feel this gives me a more stable platform from anything from my 10x42 els up to my kowa 884.

As @aron said it is also shorter as well as lighter but my main reason is I wouldn't stand and use that light and small of a tripod anyway. It doesn't take much vibration or movement to obscure the view when using a 624 or the 634. I almost always sit, generally on the ground when using my 624. Keeps a lower profile to help mitigate the negative effects of the wind, to obtain a better picture of what I'm looking at. If I am going to observe while standing, I'm going to use an 824CFL and it's not generally to far from the truck in instances like that.
