Anyone have firsthand experience using slick trick 125 gr Magnums while Elk hunting? Good, bad, indifferent, etc.???

I've used them. They are a great head but you need to ensure you have some "Umph" behind your bow. The blades are very steep and causes big holes at the expense of penetration.

I've killed alot of stuff with them, but I know one bull I lost is still a head scratcher.

I agree with the above. The blade angle isn’t best for marginal set ups. Viper tricks are pretty versatile and really good on elk and larger game

I shot my elk last year with the griz trick. slightly larger. broadside shot, 65lb carbon spyder bow, axis arrow with 50 grain inserts. If I remember I was like around 470 grain arrow weight. My arrow barely passed thru at 45 yards. I think it hung up on the fletchings for a few steps before it fell out. I decided I would go smaller to the magnums and raise my arrow weight to 500 that day.

This year I have a 500 grain arrow shooting ironwills. I have magnums has a backup set of broadheads. Sorry about how scattered this post is but hopefully some info to help.

I killed 2 elk with 100gr magnums. My set up was light, only 405grs but I I got a pass thru at 43 yds with broken ribs on the entrance and exit and another pass thru at around 15yds. Both elk died within 50yds.

They cut a 1 1/8" diameter 'X' same as any other similar shaped broadhead with sharp blades.

The steep angle may be a concern with a light set up, but as far as blood trails go........a 11/8" 'X' pattern cut is a 1 1/8" 'X' pattern cut once through an animal. The lethality and blood trail related to it is all based upon your placement of said cut.

More often than not, a poor blood trail or a lost animal has little to do with the selected head and everything to do with shot placement. Most folks are just looking for somewhere to place blame besides themselves for a piss poor shot.

Killed elk, mule deer and whitetail last year with Mags 125.
Worked great for me. Fly great on my set up. 450 grain arrow

Not the best head...as stated, bad blade angles and cheap blades. I shot them for a few years many years ago.

I've had that head push tissue out the exit hole instead of slicing it...thats not good.

I had same issue but with QAD exodus on elk and deer numerous times.

Slicks have been around forever and there is a reason for it. If you use the standard or magnum and put it where it needs to be they will not fail you-period.

I have killed two elk and a moose with the ST standards. Second elk bull didn’t bleed much but that was based on the shot being a little high but a complete pass through. Shot the moose at 45 yards and got a complete pass through. It comes down to shot placement really. They will be heading to the mountains with me Friday night too.

Just shot a mule deer with the mag last night. Hit rib on the way in, passed through both lungs, exited, and buried into the dirt in some scrub oak (can't find the arrow). Hopefully get to put one through an elk next week!

^yep....I've seen some bad performance with not only the short wide heads but some of the mech heads too.

It seems its always situations where the head has a lot of hair hide contact on heavier animals like hogs, elk...but almost never an issue on thin skinned game like whitetails.

So heres a pic for the OP

When Gary the owner of ST died, I had this idea to use one of the heads he gave me as a tribute....though I hadn't used them in years due to the issues I've seen. [Gary was an amazing guy, RIP. The company has since been sold for a few years now.]

So this is a ST Standard 125 above in the pic that killed a nice 6 point bull in Az. I shot him quartering away slightly and the head lodged in his off shoulder. A bit of a 'Kerplunk' on the hit.... I prefer the effortless entry of a cut on contact head that doesn't spook them.

The head worked just fine...but as you can see, its not very good steel with the blade edges rolled over....this from in the shoulder and the bull trotting off 50 yds.

If you are a died in the wool ST fan, I would use the Std over the Mag for the better blade angles.

Tear it up man, I know that most have stated something about blade angles causing an issue when compared to other heads but if you do the math of mechanical advantage you'll see not much of a difference in head to head variety amongst the slick trick heads. I shoot standards just because they fly so well, and I believe if it aint broke done fix it but have also killed animals with mags as well. One thing most people are unaware of is their warranty and customer service. Gary was great at this and the guys at TOG will still take care of you if you have issues with Ferrules or Blades.
