My first rifle was a $200 pawn shop special Marlin X7 25-06, and I tagged my first elk with it the same year I got it. A friend helped me load some 101 Barnes LRX to about 3050, and they did the job just fine. We could have leaned way harder on that bullet, but ran out of time for load development before my hunt. I'd describe the recoil as sharp, but not painful. Unfortunately I could not spot my impacts with it.
The next year I sold it and bought a Howa 6mm ARC and loaded 101 Hammer Hunters to 3000 fps. I figured if the same weight bullet going 3050 was good enough, then the 6mm going almost as fast should be fine as well. I still haven't taken an animal with it, though.
I still have my 25-06 dies and brass, and I've thought a lot about buying a rifle chambered in it again. It's just such a cool cartridge, and I'd argue it's one of the best options for hunters wanting to shoot copper bullets. The new 89gr Hammer HBCs going 3700 would be awesome, and I think in a 9-10 lb rifle with a suppressor and better stock geometry it'd be a lot easier to spot impacts with it than it was with that old X7.
