Slept on my Cabellas XL outfitter cot for 10 nights in Colorado and had zero back pain, get home to my memory foam bed and after a couple nights my lower back is sore and stiff as hell, it might not have a lot to do with hunting but does anybody have some good advice on a pretty firm bed that doesn't cost 3 to $5000?
We have a Tempur-pedic that is 8+ years old that wasn't cheap and I have been reluctant to replace it but I'm pretty sure if I can sleep better on a cot there's got to be a better choice for what I have at home

I've had back issues for many years and I bought a pretty cheap rock of a mattress and threw a 3" memory foam pad on top and it works for me. I slept one night on a tempur pedic mattress as a guest and I'd rather sleep on concrete than do it again. My back was locked up the next morning and it took several trips to the back quack to straighten me out.

Same experience for me. Nothing bothers my back more than my foam mattress. The wife loves it though... I have honestly been thinking of trying to figure out a way to slide a sheet of plywood in between the pillowtop and the mattress for some more support. That shows how desperate I am huh! LOL!

If I was going new I would get the adjustable air mattress style. Slept on a couple of those and they were great. sleep number or something similar.

I had the same issues for years, have the same mattress and everything, was talked into going to a back quack and have been great ever sense..... When I start getting stiff in the mornings I make an appointment and am right as rain for another couple months!! Just an idea!

Wife and I bought a Sleep Number bed a few years ago. I wasn't real happy about spending that much on a bed, but now I'm glad we did. It took me about 7-10days to get it adjusted for me, but I haven't had a stiff back since.

This ^^^^^^

It does require a bit of an investment up front, but you'll thank yourself in the end. If you don't want to buy the top of the line sleep number, you can get the lower end models and upgrade them with accessories to meet your needs. Also, not sure if this applies at all the stores, but they typically give discounts (35-50%) to people in the medical field. MDs, nurses, chiro, etc.

My chiropractor told me to not get a soft pillow top mattress. To go with a firm pillowtop. I spent about a grand on mine, 15 year warranty on it, and I sleep pretty well. It is soft yet firm. I would say like a bed you sleep in at a nice hotel. And chiropractor appointements about once every 6 weeks have helped my back alot.

Man that's funny I have the same issue but its either my cot or the bed in my horse trailer, I feel great in both but my bed in the house I hate. Let us know what you get, I was thinking sleep number bed so I can have firm and she can have soft?

We had a sleep number years ago and it was OK, this Tempur-pedic we have is a piece of crap.
I just didn't feel like shelling out 3K for the bed, that's a lot of hunting equipment

Just read a study where they think a lot of back pain is actually caused by stress, anxiety and other related issues. In many cases, there is no physical link to the pain. Maybe you are stress free and relaxed in the mountains?

There's no question in my mind that stress can lead to back pain. When I get stressed my back tightens up and in no time I've injured it. I've had two back surgeries for real damage but stress lead to the damage. Your body attacks itself when under general mental stress which manifests as real injury. Heart disease , cancer , diabetes , and the rest of the auto immune diseases all have a stress component. I suspect that degenerative disc disease is rooted in an auto immune disorder that has a stress trigger component. But in this case it might just be the crappy bed that's hurting his back :)
