Hey all,
I'm trying to shave some pounds on my backcountry elk hunt, SW Montana. Has anyone just thrown a pad on the ground and slept on that under a tarp? Thanks for any feedback or lessons learned.

That is a great way to go in SW Montana. No real lessons learned, other than be prepared to deal with wind. Once you have snow on the ground I prefer a full tent, mainly to be able to seal off against spindrift (again, wind).

I do that but with a DCF bathtub footprint from Zpacks or an ultralight bivy from Borah. 3. 2 - 5 oz. 12 - 14 oz total for tarp plus tub or bivy.
