Sleeping bag width

Preferences for excess space aside, Is there a general rule of thumb for how wide a sleeping bag should be relative to the circumstance of your shoulders? Like a certain number of inches more than your shoulders?

Hmmm. Not sure there is a rule. I Have wide shoulders and will take the widest bag I can find. Keep your sleeping position in mind to. I am a side sleeper and almost never sleep with my arms at my sides. So in addition to my shoulders I need room to aomodae my arms too.
