Being cold sucks. The thermarest extreme and nemo max both get above that. From what you also wrote, I think sleeping in layers is detrimental. You want moisture to move out, some of the layers you described can retain moisture.

Minimal; undies and a light merino because both move moisture and insulate when doing so. If you really need more warmth, throw your puffy stuff over top like an extra blanket. Put your other clothes in between your bag and pad if you want to keep them warm.

If that Nemo bag is one of their spoon shapes, keep in mind that space needs heated, and that spoon has more space than a normal mummy. So, their rating is generous compared to reality.

i appreciate the advice a lot thank you. i’m gonna thankfully return all the stuff to rei with this year membership policy thing and go with some more suited to the elements gear.

My opinion is that the warmest pad I can afford is well worth it. I can do a lot in a 30deg quilt and one of the pads I mentioned.

It’s easy to tell if the pad is the problem because you’ll feel the cold coming from the ground up.

Yeah a higher R value pad will help a lot. I use the neoair xtherm nxt 7.3 R and weighs under a pound. If in snow add a foam pad under the air pad to add warmth.

I’ve run this pad with a WM Kodiak, SG 0 and 15 degree bags, and a 30 degree feather friends bag. The WM is the warmest but also the heaviest. Both SG kept me more than warm, and I’ve used the 15 without a pad before bc forgot my pad, stayed warm. FF is the lightest and the only time I was cold is when I didn’t change out of layers that I sweat in.

You mentioned having on multiple layers if you had been wearing any of those throughout the day and had sweat in them that probably added to the issues, dry layers from the start. Put extra layers in the foot box to cut the space needing to warm.

I use the Night express -7c for early season and a WM antelope for later season. I was going to get a lighter WM for early season but was half broke at the time, so tried out a Taiga. Absolutely no regrets!!
Glad to hear some first hand experience, their price point and fill weight are pretty attractive in their clothing as well.

This Sea to Summit Spark 15 has been a great bag. Very lightweight and seems to run hotter than what it’s rated to.

Figure out a little better pad. Would not go under R4, unless you truly are in wamr weather all the time....I too carry a little heavier pad but it's comfy and good R value

WM, buy once/cry once. They are good quality and they have some mummy models that are roomy. The REI magma might be a better deal, and able to find a size that fits your needs

i ended up sleeping one night in my nemo forte 20 bag in 32 degrees and woke up shivering and couldn’t believe it, wore 2 merino wool shirts with under armor heat gear tights and a pair of kuiu attack pants with a pair of the kuiu merino wool socks and my kuiu puffy jacket stuffed down by my feet, Anyone else have this issue? also what cold weather bags you guys running?
Get a sleeping bag liner as well. It will bump up the heat as well. They make tons of different liners and it makes taking care of your bag easier.
