Quick question… when packing your sleeping bag in your backpack, what do you prefer … to just stuff it in the bottom of the pack and then layer on top of it to compress it down, or do you use a compression sack for it ?

I used to stuff sack, now it just goes in the bottom of the bag, unless there is inclement weather my down bag now goes in a dry or contractor bag.

It’s preference, but let me break out of camp just a few minutes quicker…

I stuff it in the bottom. I find that it fills the pack in better and other items will tuck in better for a pack that is property loaded. It’s another 1-2 ounces less not carrying the stuff sack. I believe it is faster to pack up because it’s quicker to just pack the sleeping bag than it is to goof around with getting it into a stuff sack and packing it after. The weight and time aren’t much of a savings. The main thing is the pack is loaded better.

I put my thermarest pump sack in my pack with the bag open. Then I stuff the quilt in the thermarest bag, push all the air and space out of it, and then roll the top so that it holds the vacuum.

This fills the bottom of the bag very well and doubles as waterproofing for my down quilt.

Hmm. I think I know what you’re getting at. I might try that.

I rephrased the original post a bit. …but yes, it is the bees knees. That stuff sack is a lot of weight, relatively speaking, to serve just one purpose and so is a compression sack. This is killing three birds with one bag.

I’m going to fiddle with some variation of that. Thanks!

i put my sleeping bag in its compression sack, then put it in the bottom of a dry bag along with my puffy, spare t shirt, socks, and boxers. and it goes into the bottom of my backpack. sleeping bag and puffy always in a dry bag. last year when i was unloading the float plane the float came unlodged from the shore and noone noticed and when i turned around with my backpack in hand to step off the float i landed in the lake with my backpack lmao it was over my head deep. thank god all my shit is in dry sacks and it was +30*C out

Yes. This is pretty much what I do. I do it a little different in that I put the quilt in the pump loosely outside of the pack. Then put that in the bottom of my pack. I definitely do not like the idea of having my quilt in my pack without something offering water resistance.

I don’t think there’s a wrong answer here. I’ve always liked the idea of just shoving it in my pack but I continue to to use the stuff sack.

There's always a chance for bad weather here, especially when in the mountains, so I always stuff it in a DCF dry bag and in the bottom of my pack with all the other lighter, bulkier stuff. The bag itself weighs about 14g, or 0.5 oz.

I’m also a stuffer with one little change. I put it in a black trash bag without tying it or anything and just stuff it on the bottom. Just extra assurance for me to keep it dry and clean. The trash bag will double for a field dressing aid if I’m lucky

The thing I really like about this idea is that I’m already carrying the pump sack as it’s part of the sleeping pad sack. I don’t have to be paranoid about my sleeping bag because it’s synthetic (allergic to down) but I’d still rather it stay dry. I wouldn’t carry an extra bag to put it in but this idea let’s me make my gear pull double duty.

I have used a compression sack, but am now using a looser stuff sack and I fit it into the gaps. Seems to work well for my usual situation so I can compress the pack a little smaller making use of the bag filling gaps instead of being it’s own compressed ball. I am typically in dry conditions so it’s not for everyone. If I planned on getting wet it’d go in a dry compression bag and depending on the trip, maybe that in a garbage bag too. I’m going to try to sew a thin fleece panel to half of the inside of my stuff sack for next season so I can turn it inside out to stuff with clothes for a pillow instead of using a jacket like I usually do.

Thanks for the great replies. I like the idea of a looser waterproof stuff sack that you can put the bag in for protection but still stuff down
