Been working on a new down sleeping bag. To all you folks that go in deep and lean.....toward weight conscious or minimalist, what do you prefer for temperature rating? Sorry to discriminate!

So far I've got prototypes in 30 and 15 degree, but I'd love to know if I should shift one way or the other.

I'd lean toward the 30F version. IMO, added warmth can be added by changing sleep pads and wearing puffy gear to bed.

Using a 50F and 30F EE quilts (synthetic) and a Stone Glacier 32F quilt (treated down) paired with sleeping pads with R values of 4.5-8 for temps here in Alaska ranging from about 20F-60F. Anything colder than 20F and I tend to grab my 0F SG Chilkoot bag and my highest R value pad.

Just one dude's thoughts...

Take a look at the Feathered Friends Swift UL 20 and try to beat it.

I say that in the most encouraging way possible.

I am no sleep expert but I use a 40 degree quilt for summer/ early fall and 15 degree mummy for fall/winter now. I layer accordingly from there. If you do a 20 or 25 comfort will you lose people to a 15?? IDK what triggers people to spend up on a bag? I personally “froze my bag off” wet, cold, on and off for a week at 10-11k. I said never again.. bought a 15 degree comfort bag and paid up for quality. My 20 degree synthetic that I left compressed turned into a 35 degree bag. Nothing like shivering yourself to sleep with all your clothes on in a crap sleeping bag.

I also think the bags should be rated with a specific pad r value that was used in the process to get that rating.

20 degree is what works for me from Summer thru about 5 degrees..layer up when in single digits and it's ok but not toasty. Pad is important. I run a high R value pad. Why not a lightweight good quilt that fully unzips. They mummy foot box is a no go for me....then I am all in.
