Looking to see what kind of luck people with sleep apnea are having with mouth pieces. I have a portable machine and battery but at 5 pounds it leaves me wishing for a lighter set up. Hoping I can find some help here. Thanks

I have mild apnea and got one this year. Doc said it’s borderline on if I needed a mask or could get away with mouthpiece. So far, it’s been better, not necessarily amazing. I’d ask your doc/provider if you think it will work with your cause of apnea (jaw, tongue, subconscious)

What is your prescription ? I have sleep apnea and was dianosed as 14 incidents/hour. My dentist told me he could make up a mouthpiece for me for $1400. He also said I was border line for a mouthpiece. I use a snoregaurd from walmart that was like $56 when I am hunting. Use a machine at home. The mouth piece works far better than without. It is a generic product that you boil in water and mould to your teeth. My machine at home is best.

There's a couple good cpap threads on here. I have moderate apnea. One thread discusses lightweight power units. Search the forum for them. Great info. I have the resmed travel cpap and it's pretty light. I won't go without it as I feel like crap without sleeping with one. I just decided to invest in lighter gear elsewhere to offset the weight of my system. Something to consider if the mouthpiece falls thru. For what a mouthpiece costs, you can get some good lightweight gear instead!

I got mine about a month ago. Still getting used to it from a comfort perspective, but my snoring has completely stopped and my deep sleep per night is up about 10x.

Also interested in this. My dentist makes a mouthpiece as well and I've thought about it. Hauling the cpap camping is a hassle, backpacking I just dont bother.

For those with a mouthpiece, how is it if you have a stuffy nose?

Mandibular advancement devices (MAD’s) are only indicated for mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea and not for central sleep apnea.
Cash prices are going to range from 1200-1600. They are great within their indicated range and a whole lot lighter than a CPAP. They do have possible side effects just like any other medical device but are truly great for the patient intolerant of a CPAP and with mild to moderate OSA

I have a "snore guard" that I got through my dentist, I'm a mouth breather when I sleep, it essentially stops the bottom jaw from falling back when relaxing as you fall asleep. My wife swears by it haha, it takes some time to get used to but it definitely works. It keeps the bottom jaw forward which keeps your air way open so you can breath. I got it covered under my health benefits through work. Cost me $50 CAD out of pocket.

I did order a Cheapo one off amazon you boil and bite down on to try before committing to the expensive one. It works but was pretty uncomfortable.

I would suggest tracking your sleep with a Fitbit or something like it for a week or so, get one of the Cheapo snore guards off amazon and track for another week and see if there is a difference.

Inexpensive way to try before you buy the custom fit one from the dentist.

I make MAD’s for patients and they work quite well for the right candidates. I have a hunting partner who goes from intolerable to share a tipi with to AOK with one in…if he remembers it. You know who you are.

Anecdotally, I personally have been mouth taping for the past month or so and doing sleep tests and snore tests and my sleep quality has gone up and snoring has gone way down. Wife can confirm that. Could just get some dual use out of your electrical tape you already have on your barrel at camp.

I used a mouthpiece for 10 years and finally moved to a CPAP 15 years ago. I’ve only had one mouth piece out of 5 that was worth it and provided any relief. That model had an upper and lower mold tied together with very large rubber bands. It kept the lower jaw from dropping back and down. If I could find a dentist/dr to make a new one for hunting purposes only I would make the appt today. I found the other devices I needed a dentist to provide were always steered towards whatever they are paid on and not what I asked for. I was so disappointed in the last one. It hurt so much I threw it away.

I use a dental lab called “Panthera” in Canada. They are the best designed that I have seen. They are far superior to the ones I’ve gotten from the large labs in the USA. They cost a lot though

That thing looks wayyyyyy less intrusive than the rig I have. I should have done a little more research first...

Thanks for the replies. I have been active on the other cpap threads and feel like for 5-6 nights I have the lightest setup I can come up with. I have the transcend micro with a renogy 72000 mAh pack at about 5 pounds. My prescription calls for 9 cmh2O. I had a lot of disturbances per hour in the 22 to 26 range but my numbers could be off. I am not expecting to get the same quality sleep I get from my machine but basically enough to allow the others in my group to not be woken up from the chainsaw (me) sleeping next to them. I used to use it religiously but with kids in another room (and my inability to stay awake while gettIng them to bed) I would say im using it about 30% of the time the way it is. I was hoping to get a mouth piece that I only use in the back country so I could save some major weight. I have lightened my pack a decent amount in other areas but this 5 pound anchor has me seriously interested in another option.

I was using a cpat machine for a year or so, bought an over the counter mouth piece for a hunt. Now I never use my cpat machine anymore and sleep just fine

The mouth pieces have varying levels of sleekness. Here's what mine looks like, double Decker teeth test with no adjustability. I worked with an airway specialty dentist
